Scenario No. 1 - WW3

This is in nobody’s interest, although its the first thought that flashes through Joe Public's mind. It could be triggered by accident, by a series of moves that force one side to begin a nuclear exchange that spiralled out of control. For example, if either side used tactical nuclear weapons and that triggered a disproportionate nuclear response. Even so consider if one side used tactical nukes, and the other side hit back with a proportionate response the most likely outcome would be that would be the one and only exchange as it would be stalemate.

Its a no win situation for all players, so its rather like on the eve of World War 2 when mass gas attacks never happened. All that happened was people found other uses for Gas Mask Cases. What should be remembered is that on the eve of world war 2, according to all the pundits, experts, and even govts.... World War 2 would lead to the annihilation of all major cities by a combination of Bombing and Gas Attacks. It never happened, not even with maniacs like Stalin, Hitler and the other WarLords. Like nowadays, it did provide the Military Industrial Complex an opportunity to sell some really insane "solutions" to the Tax Payers and made a stinking pile of cash.

As with every war, the experts are not really predicting the future, but replaying past conflicts to gain insight. The problem is when they are dishonest, motivated by profit and politics. Honest appraisal seeks to learn lessons from mistakes and is productive.

Scenario No. 2 - Contained Battlefield

This is more likely because nobody wants WW3, and its what both sides military planners work upon.

Instead of a Proxy War between Russia and NATO, it is direct conflict - but contained to a region just like any other of the various Proxy Wars. For example, Crimea goes hot but all the other borders and regions do not directly participate. Georgia is another potential flashpoint. Both of the examples are not currently NATO members, but given the current state of relations its not that difficult to imagine.

Scenario 3 - The robots would take over.

Barring a full nuclear exchange, mini/tactical nukes targeting underwater communication pipelines, large naval fleets, targets that wouldn't let anyone say that country bombed innocent civilians purposefully at first. Then comes EMPs, sound weapons, space warfare targeting satellites, maybe even the UFOs will finally be used without regard to keeping them secret anymore. Eventually though, it would make production and scientific advancement of robots and drones the biggest goal of every nation at war. Land drones, air drones, sea drones (ships/submarines), space drones.

They'll absolutely be used for keeping people in line while half the country is out in the street protesting and most refuse to join the military. They wouldn't need us anymore because of the robots anyway. It would be the end of any form of freedom left.

I feel in a way, the old fear of the complete nuclear change might actually be better, with a chance of those surviving to rebuild somewhat from what was left. Robots would be the only winners in today's scenario.

Scenario No. 4 - It Will All Be Over By Christmas

Of course when phrased as it will all be over by christmas its in your face obvious that its a desire and not a fact. Yet please note how the pundits and the planners ignore the option of a protracted war. Enough said, its an all too common theme.
