CIA chief hints agency is working to change Venezuelan government

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 26 JULY 2017 GMT

The head of the CIA has suggested the agency is working to change the elected government of Venezuela and is collaborating with two countries in the region to do so.

In one of the clearest clues yet about Washington’s latest meddling in the politics of Latin America, CIA director Mike Pompeo said he was “hopeful that there can be a transition in Venezuela and we the CIA is doing its best to understand the dynamic there”.

He added: “I was just down in Mexico City and in Bogota a week before last talking about this very issue, trying to help them understand the things they might do so that they can get a better outcome for their part of the world and our part of the world.”

Mr Pompeo’s comments, delivered during a Q&A session at a security forum organised by the Aspen Institute think tank, have sparked outcry among supporters of Venezuela’s government. President Nicolas Maduro, who was elected in 2013, has denounced Mr Pompeo’s remarks and hit out at the governments of Mexico and Colombia.’

Election meddling: US sanctions 13 Venezuela officials, warns against electing Constituent Assembly

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 27 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421071/election-meddling-us-sanctions-13-venezuela-officials-warns-electing-constituent-assembly

‘The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on 13 senior Venezuelan officials and threatened drastic economic measures if Caracas goes ahead with Constituent Assembly elections. The interference has been justified by the body’s “threat to democracy.”

Among the 13 officials placed on the Treasury Department’s sanctions list for “undermining democracy” are President of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council Tibisay Lucena, Interior Minister Nestor Reverol, national police chief Carlos Perez, army commander General Jesus Suarez, and National Guard commander Sergio Rivero.

The vice-president for finance of Venezuela’s state oil corporation PDVSA, Simon Zerpa, also made it to the sanctions list.

“Anyone elected to the National Constituent Assembly should know that their role in undermining democratic processes and institutions in Venezuela could expose them to potential US sanctions,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday.’

Regime Change in Action: US brands Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro a 'dictator' and imposes sanctions on leader amid bloodshed

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 1 AUGUST 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421700/regime-change-action-us-brands-venezuelas-nicolas-maduro-dictator-imposes-sanctions-leader-amid-bloodshed

‘The United States has branded Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s president, a “dictator” on a par with Syria’s Bashar al-Assad or North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, and imposed sanctions on him following Sunday’s controversial vote on the the constitution.

The international community rounded on Mr Maduro on Monday and condemned polling day violence in which up to 15 people were killed.

Mr Maduro hailed the vote as a “sublime” victory for the Venezuelan people, as the country’s government-allied electoral council said more than eight million people had cast ballots nationwide to give the president increased powers.

But the opposition dismissed that figure as fabricated, pointing to reports of empty polling stations and citing anonymous government sources as putting the figure at just under 2.5 million.’

Venezuela foils foreign-backed military rebellion

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 7 AUGUST 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/422497/venezuela-foils-foreign-backed-military-rebellion

‘Authorities in the ruling Socialist Party of Venezuela have announced that an anti-government military action has been suppressed near the central city of Valencia.

Diosdado Cabello, a senior official in President Nicolas Maduro’s ruling party, said on Sunday that the reported rebellion in a military base in the town of Naguanagua was crushed in the beginning earlier in the day and that the situation in the base was now under control.

Cabello’s statement came hours after the release of a video that showed a group of men in military uniform calling for a broad uprising against Maduro. The soldiers said the action was only a rebellion against Maduro’s move to dismantle democratic institutions in Venezuela.

“This is not a coup d’etat,” said a man in the video who identified himself as Juan Carlos Caguaripano, a former National Guard captain, adding, “This is a civic and military action to re-establish constitutional order. But more than that, it is to save the country from total destruction.”

Caguaripano, seen flanked by about a dozen men in military uniforms, also called for the formation of a transitional government in Venezuela.’

I think we can be sure that the US shadow government will try again.

Tillerson Threatens Regime Change in Venezuela

Washington has made one of its most foreboding threats so far against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson openly floated the possibility of stepping up “regime change” measures against the government of democratically-elected President Nicolas Maduro.

“Our approach to Venezuela has been to try to work through coalition partners, through the OAS as well as others who share our view of Venezuela’s future ... Clearly what we want to see is for Venezuela to return to its constitution, return to its scheduled elections, and allow the people of Venezuela to have the voice in their government they deserve," Tillerson told members of the press.

“We are evaluating all of our policy options as to what can we do to create a change of conditions where either Maduro decides he doesn’t have a future and wants to leave of his own accord or we can return the government processes back to their constitution,” the former Exxon Mobil chief executive added.

'Only in the world of comic-book fantasies is the United States a friend to the oppressed in Africa or anywhere else on the planet. In the real world, the U.S. is a predator, colonial/capitalist nation. But like the imagined nation of Wakanda, in the latest cultural assault on critical mass consciousness, “American exceptionalism” and “make America great again” — two slogans representing both sides of the imperialist coin—ruling class interests are obscured and the people are reduced to working against their objective interests and being accomplices to imperial lawlessness.

In every part of the world, the United States is engaged in maniacal, criminal assaults on democracy, basic human decency and common sense. From its support for armed jihadists groups in Syria and its illegal occupation of that nation, transferring heavy military equipment to its puppet regime in Ukraine, supporting unending war in Afghanistan, to the military invasion of African, the commitment to maintaining U.S. global dominance has moved war and militarism to the center of U.S. strategy.

But nowhere is U.S. criminality more apparent and unrelenting than right here in the Americas where the Pan-European project was born in 1492. That was the year “Europe” was born, emerging from its relative cultural backwardness using with terrifying efficiency the only advantage it had over the more civilized people of the region—armor protection and steel weapons—to slaughter the people, take the land and begin the 500-hundred-year nightmare the people of the world have suffered ever since.

“The commitment to maintaining U.S. global dominance has moved war and militarism to the center of U.S. strategy.”

Today, the barbarism of the Pan-European project continues under the tutelage of what history will record—if humanity survives—as the most violent, racist, oppressive human experience ever to have emerged in the short span of human existence on Earth: the United States of America.'

RT - Russia Today

‘US is allowed to meddle’: Democracy promotion is ‘US policy’, TV panel concludes
http://www.rt.com/usa/419500-us-meddling-defense-msnbc/

'Citing dozens of well-documented cases of direct US interference in foreign lands is just Russian whataboutism and also very unfair, because democracy promotion is a “stated US policy,” according to the sharp sticks at MSNBC.

During a not-at-all predictable discussion on MSNBC’s ‘Deadline White House’, host Nicolle Wallace pressed her guests to weigh-in on former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul’s recent twitter accusation. Spam_A Spam_B McFaul said that Fox News host Sean Hannity was using “American alleged interference in other countries’ elections” to deflect criticisms of alleged Russian attempts at “violating our sovereignty.” According to McFaul, Americans who are naive enough to think that decades of US foreign meddling should factor into hysterical discussions about alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections have fallen victim to a “whataboutism argument Putin’s TV channels make.”

As if momentarily hypnotized by a KGB electromagnetic wave weapon, New York Times journalist Jim Rutenberg conceded that "there is some truth to the fact that the United States has engaged in election meddling over its history,” but then quickly came to his senses, clarifying that American meddling is usually nothing more than altruistic attempts to help democratic movements defeat evil foreign despots. “What Ambassador McFaul is onto is that it's not always the same thing,” Rutenberg said.

Not missing a beat, Wallace, who served as director of media affairs at the White House under George W. Bush before becoming a fancy television host, plunged head-first into US government talking points, as if magically transported back to 2003.'
