Manchester Arena attacker 'did NOT act alone': Terrorist carried his bomb around city centre for hours before targeting Ariana Grande gig as police reveal they've found explosives at a 'number of addresses'

  • Suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated device at Ariana Grande concert
  • He killed 22 people, including seven children, in the shocking attack in May
  • Police revealed today that they do not believe the 22-year-old acted alone
  • Investigator says Abedi wasn't part of 'large network', but more arrests likely
    • By Richard Spillett, Crime Correspondent For Mailonline

      Published: 10:55, 6 July 2017
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4670780/Others-involved-Manchester-Arena-attack.html

Manchester Arena suicide bomber Salman Abedi did not act alone and carried his bomb around the city for hours before blowing himself up, police believe. Anti-terror officers investigating the attack found explosives at a number of addresses around the city during raids after the attack, they revealed today.  Abedi, 22, detonated his bomb in the foyer of an Ariana Grande concert in May, killing 22 people, including seven children, and injuring 250.

Greater Manchester Police are currently working with authorities in Libya to speak to the bomber's brother, Hashem, who is being held by a militia in the North African country. Investigators are also looking into whether Abedi financed his bomb-making through a student loan.

The explosion ripped through the arena's foyer as thousands of fans, mostly young girls and their parents, were leaving the venue following the performance. DCS Russ Jackson, head of counter terrorism policing in the north west of England, said today that police were now clear on Abedi's movements in the run-up to the attack, they knew the make-up of the bomb and where parts were obtained. He said: 'There were a number of opportunities he would have had to detonate the device. 'On that evening, we've got him at different points in Manchester. That's not all going to crowded places, but he's got it in public places, at different points, with the the backpack on.

'If we assume it's all primed and ready to go - and that would be a reasonable working assumption - there there were different points he could have done it. 'He's clearly gone to different locations. We're never going to get into this man's mind. Our assessment is that he's targeted the Arena. He wasn't looking for somewhere else that evening. 'He was out in the early part of the evening. The best we can say is for several hours before.'  Police carried out a number of raids in the days after the attack but have previously suggested Abedi acted alone. A total of 21 people have now been arrested, of which twelve people have been released without charge.

DCS Jackson said today: 'We do believe that there are other people potentially involved in this. We do not believe this is part of a large network.  'We do believe that further arrests are possible. We want to speak with Hashem Abedi and we can now say we are currently engaging with the CPS and the Libyan authorities.' Mr Jackson also told of calls Abedi made, reportedly to his mother and others, on the night of the attack were another 'key line of inquiry', Mr Jackson said, but would not be drawn further.

He said: 'Abedi was a student and we know he had access to student loans. That doesn't discount the fact he could have had money from other origins.' He said no video or note has been found by police left by Abedi to explain his motivation.

DCS Jackson added: 'This is a live criminal investigation and central to it there are 22 murdered people and grieving families. There's now more than 250 injured people - many severely - and they need to be part of the investigation. 'The searches that we conducted on average took eight days to complete. The digital exhibits we've seized contain over three million files and 15 terabytes. We have now nearly 16,000 hours of CCTV and we anticipate it will take many months to work through this. 'We have taken 755 statements and there are 3,200 people who form part of the investigation.

Police previously said they believed Abedi assembled the device by himself in the days before the attack. They had said it was unclear whether he acted alone in obtaining materials for the bomb which officers believed were stored in a white Nissan Micra found parked in the Rusholme area of the city.

It is believed that Abedi started building the detonator in a workshop at his family's address in Fallowfield in south Manchester. He is understood to have finished off the device in a second flat. The bomber left the UK for Libya on April 15 and returned on May 18. His brother Hashim reportedly told Libyan counter-terror forces he knew his brother was planning something and that his brother was radicalised while living in the UK two years before his deadly attack.

If the authorities found "explosives" at multiple addresses does that not hint at a larger network?  The authorities have yet to identify the nine people who they still have in custody.

What militia is holding the allege bomber's brother.  Inquiring minds want to know.

Ramadan Abedi was part of the Libyan secret police. However it says he left in 1990.

Ramadan came to the uk in 1993 ish to work in "airport security" in Manchester. ( I am glad our security services were protecting us from another Lockerbie  ::) )

Quote
For more than two decades Ramadan is said to have plotted and obsessed with the overthrow of the man he hated beyond all others, the brutal Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

It was a hatred that saw the 51-year-old airport security guard flee his homeland, set-up base in Saudi Arabia, seek – and gain – asylum in Britain and eventually return as part of the armed revolution that overthrew Gaddafi
.

This blowback happened again then. We continued to work with Al Qaeda even after 911 and continued to get blowback. We are all victims in this crazy intelligence agency led secret war.
Some might say it is time the activities of inteliigence agencies were published  to stop this.

Britain is locked in 'extraordinary' feud with Libya over extradition of brother of Manchester suicide bomber who 'played key role in atrocity'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5002308/Britain-row-Libya-Manchester-bomber-s-brother.html

'Britain is locked in an extraordinary dispute with a Libyan militia over moves to extradite the brother of the Manchester suicide bomber so he can face trial in the UK.

Hashem Abedi, 20, is accused of playing a ‘key role’ in the outrage, which left 22 people dead, including seven children.

He is said to have helped brother Salman, 22, buy materials for the device he detonated at a concert on May 22.

Britain had an extradition agreement with Libya but it collapsed when Colonel Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011 and the country remains divided.

Hashem Abedi is currently being held in a prison in the Libyan capital Tripoli by the Special Deterrence Force (SDF), a unit that tackles terrorism and crime.

It says plans are under way to have him prosecuted in Libya.

UK officials want him tried in Britain. There are fears if he was prosecuted in Libya his evidence may not be admissible in UK courts – if he had been tortured, for example.'

Well they have kept it a secret so far . . .

Would not be surprised if he was found dead in his cell, two head shots, and its declared a suicide.

Abedi born in Manchester and grew up in tight-knit Libyan community that was known for its strong opposition to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

Abedi’s older brother Ismail had been a tutor at Didsbury mosque’s Koran school.

Born in 1994, the second youngest of four children, Abedi’s parents were Libyan refugees who fled to the UK to escape Gaddafi.

His mother, Samia Tabbal, 50, and father, Ramadan Abedi, a security officer, were both born in Tripoli but appear to have emigrated to London before moving to the Whalley Range area of south Manchester where they had lived for at least a decade.

Abedi went to school locally and then on to Salford University in 2014 where he studied business management before dropping out. His trips to Libya, where it is thought his parents returned in 2011 following Gaddafi’s overthrow, are now subject to scrutiny including links to jihadists.

A group of Gaddafi dissidents, who were members of the outlawed Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), lived within close proximity to Abedi in Whalley Range.

Among them was Abd al-Baset Azzouz, a father-of-four from Manchester, who left Britain to run a terrorist network in Libya overseen by Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s successor as leader of al-Qaeda.

Azzouz, 48, an expert bomb-maker, was accused of running an al-Qaeda network in eastern Libya. The Telegraph reported in 2014 that Azzouz had 200 to 300 militants under his control and was an expert in bomb-making.

Another member of the Libyan community in Manchester, Salah Aboaoba told Channel 4 news in 2011 that he had been fund raising for LIFG while in the city. Aboaoba had claimed he had raised funds at Didsbury mosque, the same mosque attended by Abedi. The mosque at the time vehemently denied the claim. “This is the first time I’ve heard of the LIFG. I do not know Salah,” a mosque spokesman said at the time.

Lina Ahmed, 21, said: “They are a Libyan family and they have been acting strangely. A couple of months ago he [Salman] was chanting the first kalma [Islamic prayer] really loudly in the street. He was chanting in Arabic.

“He was saying ‘There is only one God and the prophet Mohammed is his messenger’.’
http://www.terrorfinanceblog.com/2017/05/a-known-wolf-and-a-known-network-of-passive-supportmanchester-was-the-result-of-a-refusal-to-face-fa.html

I actually had read previously, that they worked for Gaddafi and had journeyed first to Saudi.
But the LIFG ties are more probable. It ought to bring up MI6s ties to LIFG and Al Qaeda.

A senior al Qaeda leader accused of participating in the attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya, was arrested in Turkey last month. The Libya-based terrorist leader was transferred to Jordan and subsequently to the U.S., where he is now awaiting trial, according to the Turkish Hurriyet Daily News.

A joint CIA and Turkish intelligence operation led to Abd al-Baset Azzouz’s capture when he attempted to enter Turkey with a fake passport, according to a report from Turkish daily Milliyet. Azzouz is a senior member of al Qaeda’s branch in Libya and allegedly had a role in the bombing that killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith on Sept. 11, 2012.

The CIA declined to comment on its alleged involvement in the operation and the Department of Defense did not immediately confirm Azzouz’s continued presence in the U.S.

A man by that name was put on the U.S. State Department’s Designated Terrorist List in September and described as a “key operative capable of training al Qaeda recruits in a variety of skills, such as IED [improvised explosive device] construction.” Azzouz’s name was also presented to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs last year on a list of people it did not “make sense to consider anything but ‘core’ al Qaeda members.”

Azzouz was detained for nearly 10 months in the U.K. in 2006. Upon his release, he moved to Libya at the request of al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, according to Hurriyet. Al-Zawahiri reportedly sent him to Libya to open a training camp and recruit fighters, a move that “indicates that senior al Qaeda leaders trust him to carry out the strategic task of establishing an al Qaeda network in Libya,” according to a 2012 report from the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress.

"Azzouz was detained for nearly 10 months in the U.K. in 2006" - what does that mean, "detained".

‘It remains unclear whether the Manchester bomber acted alone when preparing the device that killed 22 people, police have said.

The head of counter-terrorism in the region said Salman Abedi was likely to have built the bomb alone at his flat.

Given his suggested ties to a sophisticated Al Qaeda cell deputised to Ayman al-Zawahiri, this 'likely' seems horrifically unlikely to me.

MI5 might have been able to stop Manchester attack, report finds
Report by David Anderson QC says intelligence about suicide bomber Salman Abedi before he struck was misinterpreted

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/dec/05/mi5-manchester-attack-report-david-anderson

The terror attack on Manchester that killed 22 people might have been prevented if different decisions had been made by MI5, an official report has found.

The security agency had intelligence about the suicide bomber, Salman Abedi, “whose true significance was not appreciated at the time”, a report by the barrister David Anderson QC said. He said in retrospect different decisions might have been taken, but it was unknowable whether Abedi would then have been stopped.

Reviews of the four UK terrorist attacks between March and June this year were overseen by Anderson to provide assurance to the government that the internal reviews by the police and MI5 were thorough enough.

He said they were, and decisions made by counter-terrorism officials were mostly justifiable, but his report contains questions for MI5 and police as they battle a rising terrorist threat.

Briefing reporters, Anderson said MI5 had made judgments about Abedi that were understandable, but with hindsight were wrong.

The Manchester Bomber Was Enabled by the British Government
http://www.unz.com/pcockburn/the-manchester-bomber-was-enabled-by-the-british-government/

'The culpability of the British government and its intelligence agencies in enabling suicide bomber Salman Abedi to blow himself up at a pop concert in Manchester is being masked one year later by the mood of grief and mourning over the death and injury of so many people.

It is heartrending to hear injured children and the relatives of the dead say they do not hate anybody as a result of their terrible experiences and, if they feel anger at all, it is only directed towards the bomber himself. Victims repeatedly say that they did not want the slaughter at the Manchester Arena to be used to create divisions in their city.

The downside of this praiseworthy attitude is that it unintentionally lets off the hook those British authorities whose flawed policies and mistaken actions really did pave the way towards this atrocity. Appeals against divisiveness and emphasis on the courage of survivors have muted attacks on the government, enabling it to accuse those who criticise it of mitigating the sole guilt of Abedi.

This attitude is highly convenient for former prime minister David Cameron who decided in 2011 on military intervention against Muammar Gaddafi. His purported aim was humanitarian concern for the people of Benghazi, but – as a devastatingly critical report by the House of Commons Select Committee on Foreign Affairs said last year – this swiftly turned into “an opportunistic policy of regime change”. Spam_A Spam_B The military intervention succeeded and by the end of the year Gaddafi was dead. Real power in Libya passed to Islamist militias, including those with which the Abedi family were already associated. Pictures show Salman’s brothers posing with guns in their hands. Libya was plunged into an endless civil war and Benghazi, whose people Cameron and former French president Nicolas Sarkozy were so keen to save, is today a sea of ruins. Inevitably, Isis took advantage of the anarchy in Libya to spread its murderous influence.

This is the Libyan reality which was created by Cameron and Sarkozy, with sceptical support from Barack Obama, the then US president, who famously referred to the Libyan debacle as a “shit show”.

Libya became a place where the Abedi family, returning from their long exile in Manchester, were able put their militant Islamist beliefs into practice. They absorbed the toxic variant of Islam espoused by the al-Qaeda clones, taking advantage of their military experience honed in the Iraq war, such as how to construct a bomb studded with pieces of metal designed to tear holes in human flesh. The bomb materials were easily available in countries like Britain.

Salman Abedi was responsible for what he did, but he could not have killed 22 people and maimed another 139 others, half of them children, if the British government had not acted as it did in Libya in 2011. And its responsibility goes well beyond its disastrous policy of joining the Libyan civil war, overthrowing Gaddafi and replacing him with warring tribes and militias.'

Actually I'm surprised that this came out so soon, I thought we would have to wait a decade.
This seems to have slipped through the net, and the Daily Mail has its own commercial reasons for printing the story.

On the surface its always the Daily Mail that runs these stories of interest to the Truther Community, but I've lost count how many times my account has been blacklisted or blocked. The first time I fell foul of the Daily Mail was when one of there
censors happened to notice a comment of mine that had a few thousand likes, and get this... All I'd done was copy paste a Winston Churchill quote...

Things are not at all what they seem.
