'Elon Musk’s taxpayer-subsidized Tesla death traps are back in the news for trying to kill their drivers.

A man from North Brunswick, New Jersey, reportedly almost died after his rogue Tesla recently decided to crash off the highway – the vehicle’s so-called “autopilot” mode taking control and plowing right into several objects before coming to a sudden halt.

Local news reports indicate that the Tesla vehicle “got confused due to the lane markings,” which resulted in its inability to decipher between the highway’s driving lane and the exit lane. The driver of the Tesla says the “autopilot” split the difference and went down “the middle,” before veering off the highway entirely and crashing. The driver says he tried to take control of the Tesla and override the “autopilot,” but that the vehicle “would not let him.”

While initial reports contained a statement from Tesla that “the driver always has control,” these statements were later removed without explanation.

This incident in New Jersey is hardly isolated, as there have been multiple reports of Tesla cars getting “confused” while running on “autopilot.” The vehicles apparently have a difficult time with highway exits, and often don’t know whether to keep going, take the exit, or go down “the middle.”

Tesla insists that its cars are completely safe, and that drivers are always able to override the “autopilot” function. But that, too, appears to be a lie, as cases of Teslas overriding their drivers are on the rise.'

However, the age of cars being a symbol of freedom, autonomy, and self-responsibility appear to be over. <strong>Your car could actually report you to the police.</strong>

The cars of the near-future don’t feel like the safe, private space about which Numan sang. And the responsibility is moving away from the driver over to A.I. in a sort of Wall-E type society. Cars are becoming more like moving living rooms at the cost of personal freedom.

That is to say that self-driving, smart cars are here to stay and will monitor you and possibly report on you as they record you in your vehicle.

Today we are talking about interior-facing, driver monitoring tech which the media endearingly calls “a backseat driver.” But the technology actually has more control than a nagging passenger merely trying to direct your driving.'

Two popular smart alarm systems for cars had major security flaws that allowed potential hackers to track the vehicles, unlock their doors and, in some cases, cut off the engine.

The vulnerabilities could be exploited with two simple steps, security researchers from Pen Test Partners, who discovered the flaw, said Friday.

The problems were found in alarm systems made by Viper and Pandora Car Alarm System, two of the largest smart car alarm makers in the world. The two brands have as many as 3 million customers between them and make high-end devices that can cost thousands. Like other smart devices, smart car alarms offer people convenience, allowing owners to find their cars from a distance and unlock their doors from their phones. Pen Test Partners said it reached out to Viper and Pandora in late February and the companies fixed the security issues in less than a week. They had discovered the flaws last October.

In a statement from Directed Electronics, which owns Viper, the company said it didn't believe the vulnerability was used maliciously.

"We immediately worked with our service provider to diagnose and correct this security issue. After investigation, we concluded that this vulnerability was an unintentional result of a recent system update made by our service provider," the company said in a statement.

Pandora did not respond to a request for comment.

Like smart locks, TVs and cameras, smart car alarms are susceptible to cyberattacks and security flaws. The growth of smart devices, which integrate connected technology into everyday devices, has made the internet of things an easy target and created a new type of security threat.'

'All new cars will be fitted with speed limiters from 2022 under tough EU safety rules.

New models will need to have Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) limiters as standard within three years after the European Commission approved the legislation.

The bill includes a raft of new safety measures that are now subject to the formal approval of the European Parliament and EU member states in September.

The rules will also come into force in Britain after the nation's automotive certification body said it plans to mirror EU rules post-Brexit. Cars will be have to be equipped with safety systems such as data loggers, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver fatigue detection and reversing cameras or sensors.

All new models will need to have pre-wiring for alcohol interlocks to allow for the retrofit of in-car breathalysers for previously convicted drink drivers.

ISA technology works in conjunction with traffic-sign-recognition cameras and GPS data to determine the speed limit on the road the vehicle is being driven.

The system can then automatically adjust the restricted top speed by limiting the engine power.

However, drivers should be able to override the system by pushing hard on the throttle - just in case they're overtaking another motorist who has decided to put their foot down.

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) called for all cars to have a switch to turn the ISA on or off, though each time a vehicle is started the feature will automatically be active.'

'Young people living with higher levels of air pollution are significantly more likely to have psychotic experiences, according to the first study of the issue.

Researchers analysed the experiences of more than 2,000 17-year-olds across England and Wales and found that those in places with higher levels of nitrogen oxides had a 70% higher chance of symptoms such as hearing voices or intense paranoia.

People growing up in cities were already known to have more psychotic experiences than those outside urban areas and the new work suggests toxic air is one potential reason. But the type of study done cannot prove a causal link, and other factors such as noise could be important. Psychotic experiences are much more common in adolescents than in adults, but those having these symptoms when young are more likely to develop serious mental illnesses later. With more people around the world living in cities every year, scientists are particularly keen to uncover the reasons for mental ill health in urban centres.

The study took into account other potential causes of psychotic experiences, such as smoking, alcohol and cannabis use, family income and psychiatric history, and measures of neighbourhood deprivation. “[Nitrogen oxides] explained about 60% of the association between urban living and psychotic experiences,” said Joanne Newbury at King’s College London, who led the research. Other factors may include genetic susceptibility and experience of crime.

Nitrogen oxides come largely from diesel vehicles and are at illegal levels in most British towns and cities, with the government having lost three times in the high court over its failure to cut pollution quickly. Research is linking air pollution with an increasing range of ill health, including reduced intelligence, dementia and depression, while other work has revealed air pollution can reach the brain.'

‘Big Brother’ fears emerged yesterday about EU plans to fit speed-limiting technology in new cars.

A European Commission blueprint to stop drivers going over the limit also involves an aircraft-style ‘black box’ to record speed plus driving and location data.

Campaigners fear these tracking devices will allow police, insurers and even hackers to spy on people and monitor all their movements.

‘Intelligent speed assistance’ is at the centre of a European road-safety shake-up. These systems are capable of automatically stopping cars from exceeding the limit or cutting the speed if they pass into a slower zones. But the Department of Transport insists that mandatory systems will not physically slow a car.

It says drivers will simply be alerted by a dashboard light and an audio alert, similar to existing warnings when seatbelts are left unfastened.

The technology will have to be installed in all new cars from May 2022 and in existing models two years later. Other features include automatic emergency braking and a system which keeps a vehicle in the centre of a traffic lane.

The EU Commission claims the mandatory devices could help avoid 140,000 serious injuries by 2038.

Britain has already promised to impose the same rules, but it is understood the additional black box plans have led ministers to repeatedly raise privacy concerns with European officials. The devices track how people drive and can store data leading up to a crash. The EU says it ‘will provide crucial information for accident analysis and reducing accidents in future’.

It could also help to prosecute a speeding driver after a crash. But privacy campaigners fear such data could be exploited by insurance firms to turn down a claim if someone was shown to be driving at only slightly over the speed limit.'

'The AA have raised 'serious concerns' about the safety of smart motorways after a second fatality on the same stretch of the M1 in just a matter of months.

Derek Jacobs was killed on the motorway's northbound carriageway in Derbyshire last Friday after his van stopped in the first lane.

Police said the 83-year-old's white Volkswagen Crafter may have come to a halt because of a mechanical fault before it was hit by a red Ford Ka, which was then struck by a coach.

The tragedy comes after a woman was killed on the same stretch of motorway after she got out of a broken down car in September last year.

Both fatal accidents were on a stretch of the motorway where there is no hard shoulder, known as an all lane running system. And there have been a series of others serious incidents on the carriageway including a pile up involving a stranded HGV and several other lorries that brought gridlock.

Now the AA as said there are major safety issues, especially in relation to the response times of emergency services take to get to stranded vehicles and the lack of safety refuges on the stretch.

And they have also called for the introduction of penalties for other drivers who ignore the red X signals which indicate a lane is closed.

While many drivers have slammed the 'smart motorway' claiming it to be a money-making scheme to catch speeding drivers and in an emergency or a break-down 'you have to sit in lane one and pray for your life'.

Last Friday's fatal incident happened just after noon between junction 30 for Barlborough and junction 31 for Aston and led to the closure of the motorway for around nine hours.

Det Con Rich Howiss, from Derbyshire Police's collision investigation unit, said that a white Volkswagen Crafter stopped in lane one and was hit by a red Ford Ka, which was then hit by a coach. The driver Mr Jacobs, of Edgware, Middlesex, died at the scene.'

'One in five new childhood asthma cases in the UK could be linked to traffic pollution, new research suggests.

Exposure to nitrogen dioxide, which is mainly emitted from road transport, appears to be a "substantial" risk factor for the condition, according to a study in journal The Lancet Planetary Health.

The researchers estimate that four million new cases of childhood asthma globally - 13 per cent of those diagnosed - could be attributable to nitrogen dioxide pollution every year.

In the UK, they suggest 19 per cent of new childhood asthma cases every year are attributable to nitrogen dioxide pollution.

This figure rises to 23 per cent in Manchester and 29 per cent in London. "Our study indicates that policy initiatives to alleviate traffic-related air pollution can lead to improvements in children's health and also reduce greenhouse gas emissions," lead author Dr Ploy Achakulwisut, from George Washington University, in the US, said.

Recent examples include Shenzhen's electrification of its entire bus fleet and London's Ultra-Low Emission Zone congestion charges."

It is thought that pollution from traffic may damage airways, leading to inflammation and the development of asthma in children who are genetically predisposed to the condition.

While it is not clear which pollutant in traffic air pollution is responsible, previous research has suggested exposure to nitrogen dioxide is key.

Traffic emissions can contribute up to 80 per cent of ambient nitrogen dioxide in cities.

The researchers used global data on nitrogen dioxide concentration and asthma incidence to estimate the number of new cases in children aged one to 18 years old which could be related to traffic pollution.'

'The war on motorists continues to accelerate, fuelled by the vanity of politicians eager to pose as the champions of environmental protection.

In a culture that worships the green agenda, the punishment of drivers is presented as a moral crusade, while savage financial penalties are considered the wages of ecological sins.

In particular, the owners of diesel cars — like myself — are the new pariahs, hammered for our supposed heresy.

Yesterday, in another attack on millions of law-abiding motorists, the so-called Ultra Low Emission Zone came into effect across central London.

Under this scheme, introduced by Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan, drivers have to pay a charge of £12.50 a day if they take either a diesel car more than four years old, or a petrol car more than 13 years old, into the heart of the capital. Failure to pay will result in a brutal fine of £160, though this will be reduced to £80 if the money is handed over within a fortnight.

An estimated 35,000 vehicles a day could be caught, bringing more than £200 million a year into the coffers of the spendthrift Mayor.

And, from October 2021, the zone will be expanded to cover all of inner London within the boundaries of the North and South Circular roads.

As the owner of a second-hand Mercedes who makes regular journeys from Kent into London, I could be one of those hit by the fee, which will come on top of the £11.50 congestion charge, levied for the privilege of driving on the capital’s paralysed roads.

Some might argue I should abandon my Merc and take public transport. In fact, I frequently use trains, buses and the Underground. But, as fellow commuters will know, such journeys are incredibly expensive: a day return from my home in Margate to St Pancras, travelling in the morning and with the Tube, is £85.

So the car can be a cheaper alternative, though not for much longer, now that phony eco warrior Sadiq is on the march. And Khan, for all his self-seeking absurdity, is hardly unique. His experiment is certain to be copied throughout the country.'

'If you’re driving a late model car or truck, chances are that the vehicle is mostly computers on wheels, collecting and wirelessly transmitting vast quantities of data to the car manufacturer not just on vehicle performance but personal information, too, such as your weight, the restaurants you visit, your music tastes and places you go.

A car can generate about 25 gigabytes of data every hour and as much as 4,000 gigabytes a day, according to some estimates. The data trove in the hands of car makers could be worth as much as $750 billion by 2030, the consulting firm McKinsey has estimated. But consumer groups, aftermarket repair shops and privacy advocates say the data belongs to the car’s owners and the information should be subject to data privacy laws. Yet Congress has yet to pass comprehensive federal data privacy legislation. And although Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has said he would like to see federal privacy legislation passed by the end of the year, it is unclear if that goal can be met.

The European Union has already ruled that data generated by cars belongs to their owners and is subject to privacy rules under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations or GDPR. Automakers, meanwhile, are still trying to shape the outcome of state data privacy laws, including the one in California that goes into effect in January 2020, but might be subject to amendment before then.

The California law’s definition of personal information extends beyond what’s generated by an individual to include household information, and gives consumers the right to obtain data collected on them, to stop third-party sales of that information, and to ask companies to delete their information.

The Auto Alliance, a trade group representing the world’s largest car makers, has appealed to the state’s attorney general, asking that the companies be allowed to provide only summary information to consumers as opposed to “specific pieces of personal information a business has collected about them,” as the law requires.'

In England, there’s an epidemic of them, called “smart” because of their digital overhead panels displaying the best speed limits for maximum traffic flow. And – controversially – they allow the hard shoulder to be used as a driving lane.

Plans are under way for 400 miles of motorways to lose their hard shoulders, and many people don’t think they’re very clever at all.

A quick recap on hard shoulder history for you now (I know, I spoil you…). They were first seen in the 1960s with the building of motorways, and designed to offer some protection if your car broke down, as well as doubling as an express lane for emergency services.

It is illegal to drive on the hard shoulder and you can be fined £100 with three points put on your licence but, as ever, there are exceptions – if directed there by the police, or by a yellow sign because of roadworks. Headlines have shown that in the last seven months, two fatal accidents happened on the M1 in “smart” sections when a vehicle broke down. With no hard shoulder to pull on to, it became a sitting duck and another vehicle (and more) hit it from behind.

There are conflicting statistics about the safety of “smart” motorways, but the majority of motoring groups are urging more care, with AA president Edmund King commenting: “We support road improvements to remove pinch points and improve motorway capacity, but not if it compromises road safety.”

I am certain you’ll agree, and I’m also sure that you would never want efficiency to be put before safety. Yes, it all looks fine on paper – easing traffic to make it flow smoothly – but when it is you, or your loved one, broken down in lane one of a “smart” motorway, safety is the only thing that matters. And let’s spare a thought for the recovery drivers, too.

The grown-ups reassure us by saying as soon as an incident occurs in a lane, a big red “X” is put up on the digital overhead panel telling drivers a specific lane is closed. But, astonishingly, there are people who continue to drive in that closed lane – and the only punishment is a warning letter sent to their home.

Not smart.'

Amsterdam to ban petrol and diesel cars and motorbikes by 2030

Cars and motorbikes running on petrol or diesel will be banned from driving in Amsterdam from 2030.

The city’s council plans to phase in the change as part of a drive to clean up air pollution, which the authorities blame for shortening the life expectancy of Amsterdammers by a year.

“Pollution often is a silent killer and is one of the greatest health hazards in Amsterdam,” said the councillor responsible for the city’s traffic, Sharon Dijksma, announcing the municipality’s decision.

From next year, diesel cars that are 15 years or older will be banned from going within the A10 ring road around the Dutch capital.

Public buses and coaches that emit exhaust fumes will no longer enter the city centre from 2022. By 2025, the ban will be extended to pleasure crafts on its waters, mopeds and light mopeds.

All traffic within the built-up area must be emission-free by 2030 under the Clean Air Action plan.

The city plans to encourage its residents to switch to electric and hydrogen cars by offering charging stations to every buyer of such a vehicle. It is hoped that the second-hand electric car market will blossom in the coming years.

There will need to be 16,000 to 23,000 charging stations by 2025 to make the project viable – up from the current 3,000 in the city.

In large part due to heavy traffic in the cities of Amsterdam, Maastricht and Rotterdam, air pollution in the Netherlands is worse than European rules permit. There are concerns that the levels of nitrogen dioxide and particle matter emissions are causing respiratory illnesses.

But the Rai Association, the automotive industry’s lobby group, condemned the plan as bizarre and regressive. A spokesman said: “Many tens of thousands of families who have no money for an electric car will soon be left out in the cold. That makes Amsterdam a city of the rich.

“In 2030, about one third of the cars will be electric, we expect. But there will also be a lot of people who won’t be able to afford that by then.”

In January 2018, the Dutch health council called on the government to devise an ambitious strategy to improve air quality in the Netherlands, warning that the “blanket of pollution” would cause major health problems in the country.

City authorities and governments around the world are moving towards pushing cars that produce greenhouse gas emissions off their streets.

Last year, Madrid began restricting access to petrol vehicles made prior to 2000 and diesel vehicles made prior to 2006. Rome has pledged to ban diesel vehicles from the city centre by 2024.

The Danish government has said it wants to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and hybrid vehicles from 2035.

Tesla Model 3: Autopilot engaged during fatal crash

'A preliminary report into a fatal accident involving a Tesla Model 3 in the US has found Autopilot had been engaged 10 seconds before the crash.

The Tesla was travelling above the speed limit when it crashed into a truck towing a trailer in March 2019.

The roof of the car was sheared off in the accident and the driver was killed.

According to the report, the driver did not appear to have his hands on the wheel and neither he nor the Autopilot took any evasive action. Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office previously named the driver as Jeremy Beren Banner, 50, according to local news channel WPTV.

The investigation into the accident, which happened on a highway in Delray Beach, Florida, is being carried out by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Tesla said it was the only time during the journey that Autopilot had been activated.

"Tesla drivers have logged more than one billion miles with Autopilot engaged, and our data shows that, when used properly by an attentive driver who is prepared to take control at all times, drivers supported by Autopilot are safer than those operating without assistance," said the firm in a statement.

Tesla does not recommend that drivers remove their hands from the wheel when using the vehicle's Autopilot feature.'

'Norway’s coalition government could be brought down by a motorist-led backlash against rising road tolls being used to fund green infrastructure projects.

Since 2013 Norway’s Conservatives have been propped up in coalition with the right-wing populist Progress Party, a pro-motorist, anti-taxation group which got the fourth largest share of the vote in the last municipal elections.

But the Progress Party, led by the country’s finance minister Siv Jensen, has been losing voters to single-issue parties like “The People’s Action (FNB) – no to more road tolls” ahead of municipal elections in the autumn. Revenues from tolls have risen 40 per cent in the past four years, topping 13 billion kroner (£1.2bn) this year.

This has helped fund a 75 per cent increase in transport spending, including rail expansion, public transport and cycle initiatives to cut emissions in major cities – in addition to highway maintenance.

Progress Party officials believe continued compromise with their coalition partners on the rising number of toll roads could force the it to abandon the coalition or risk a whitewash in the autumn.

Sivert Bjornstad, a key Progress Party politician, likened the situation to the emergence of the gilets jaunes (yellow vest) movement in France, which began as a protest against mounting fuel prices.

“Many of the same kind of people are protesting this in Norway as in France and other countries,” he told Bloomberg.'

Ireland to ban new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030






'The Irish government plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, as part of a major strategy to protect the environment.

The aim is to ensure that all new cars and vans on Irish roads in 11 years' time are electric vehicles.

The proposed legislation was among 180 measures in the government's Climate Action Plan, published on Monday.

The document also includes a target to implement an EU-wide ban on non-recyclable plastic by 2030.

Rising emissions

The Climate Action Plan states that the Republic of Ireland is "way off course" in its attempts to achieve its emissions targets.

Unveiling the plan on Monday, the Environment Minister ​Richard Bruton said Ireland was "currently 85% dependent on fossil fuels".

He said that at a time when the state's carbon footprint should be reducing, Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions "have been rising rapidly" and that trend had to be reversed.

He arrived at the launch in Grangegorman, north Dublin, on a hybrid electric bus, accompanied by Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar and several other members of the cabinet.'

'Local councils are set to rake in more than £1billion profit from parking for the first time, a report reveals today.

Data shows English authorities are due to make a £913million ‘surplus’ from parking fees and penalties this financial year.

But an RAC Foundation audit suggests the authorities have underestimated income from on-street parking and car parks by between 9 and 10 per cent in recent years.

This puts local authorities on course to generate more than £1billion for all parking income, including charges, residents’ permits, and penalties. The findings were based on analysis by transport consultant David Leibling of budget figures provided by 343 English councils to the Government.

Many of the biggest predicted parking surpluses are in London, with Westminster having the largest (£72.1million) followed by Kensington and Chelsea (£36million).

The biggest amount outside the capital was reported by Brighton and Hove (£24million).

RAC Foundation director Steve Gooding said: ‘It would be no surprise at all if English councils soon breached the one billion-pound mark, which is quite a windfall from a service that is intended to be all about managing traffic.’

Councils insist they do not make a profit on parking because the money is reinvested in transport and roads.

But campaigners complain that motorists see little benefit given the state of many local roads.'

'Road signs are being translated into nine foreign languages to stop lorry drivers from overseas getting confused.

For the first time ever in the UK digital motorway displays will show traffic warnings in German, French, Polish, Romanian, Dutch, Lithuanian, Slovak and Hungarian.

An automatic number plate reader will be able to identify which country the driver of the vehicle is from and Instructions will flash up in the appropriate language.

The signs will be used on the M6 junction near Carlisle after mass confusion over closures near Penrith last year, with drivers from overseas taking wrong turns.

Highways England senior project manager Steve Mason said: 'We're a listening and learning organisation and we're determined to improve the way customers get roadworks information. 'We carried out major improvements along the A66 near Penrith last year and while the communications and diversion routes worked well, we had some feedback from Cumbria Police that foreign lorry drivers were missing some of the messaging.

'This not only inconvenienced the drivers but also local communities as we had lorries on inappropriate diversion routes.

We've taken that learning on board and hopefully providing tailored messaging for foreign lorry drivers will improve everyone's experience of these roadworks.'

Inspector Steve Minnikin of Cumbria Police said: 'We provided a lot of support around the A66 closures last year and we're delighted to see that Highways England has responded to our feedback by trialling this idea by being more aware of language differences and being considerate in meeting their needs.

''We all believe this will assist the lorry drivers from other countries in rescheduling their journeys and avoid driving into a road closure with all the inconvenience that it can cause themselves and others.'

Damaging levels of pollution will still be released into the atmosphere even if electric cars become widespread, a Government report has warned. Brake, tyre and road surface wear all contribute to dangerous emissions - regardless of the type of vehicle used.

Plastic debris created from this wear and tear also contributes as much as 28 per cent of the total microplastics added to the ocean worldwide. The Air Quality Expert Group's Non-Exhaust Emissions from Road Traffic report said that the best way to reduce emissions is to lower the overall volume of traffic.

Other green ideas detailed in the report include lowering the motorway speed limits and creating emissions limits for brake pads and tyres.
