Earthquake Death Toll Continues To Rise In Turkey
The death toll continued to rise Monday in Turkey in the aftermath of a powerful earthquake.

ERCIS, Turkey (October 24, 2011)—The death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Turkey rose to about 270 Monday.

Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin tells Associated Press television on Monday that more 1,000 others were injured in the temblor that struck eastern Turkey a day earlier.

On Monday, rescuers pulled out several people alive from collapsed buildings, including a man who managed to call for help on his cell phone.

Dozens of people were trapped in hills of debris, but authorities offered hope that the death toll may not rise as high as initially feared.

Officials said hundreds of mud-brick homes in villages and concrete buildings in cities tumbled down in the earthquake that struck the province of Van, near the border with Iran, on Sunday.

Some inmates escaped a prison after one of its walls collapsed. TRT television said around 150 inmates had fled, but a prison official said the number was much smaller and many later returned.
