Spain’s Catalonia Declares Independence

Europe breaks up… bound to happen… will send the world into the next ‘great recession’ (or depression)

In American football, there’s a concept best described as “fatiguing the defense”….where the opposing team’s offense is so good…that the defenders finally get overwhelmed.

We are fast approaching this point with global govts and the rotten carcass of the Cold War, pre-Internet economy they seem bound & determined to keep propped-up.

This is kinda important, and will trigger more Russia-Phobia, which might seem like an odd comment, but who do you think will get the blame ?
Will the narrative centre around Woodrow Wilson 14 points, of which The Right to Self Determination will triumph.
Or do you think this is Russian KGB Plot to breakup a NATO Ally and threaten Bilderberg's EU.

We shall see.

Spain's constitutional court suspends Catalan referendum law

‘The Spanish Constitutional Court last night suspended a referendum law that was approved on Wednesday by the Catalan parliament, blocking the way for an vote on independence from Spain. The law will be suspended while judges consider arguments that the vote breaches the country’s constitution.

Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, vowed earlier on Thursday to “stop at nothing” to prevent Catalonia’s independence referendum, as his attorney general prepared to prosecute Catalan leaders.

In a blistering address, Mr Rajoy accused Catalonia’s parliament of an “intolerable act of disobedience” in passing its referendum law, insisting it had violated the Spanish constitution.

“The consultation is not going to happen in any case,” he said. “We are defending national sovereignty, the principle of legality and the institutions. We are defending the rights of all citizens, above all of the Catalans.”’

Mass rally expected in Barcelona in support of Catalonia independence

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 11 SEPTEMBER 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/426695/mass-rally-expected-barcelona-support-catalonia-independence

‘Hundreds of thousands are expected to take to the streets of the Spanish city of Barcelona to declare their support for a planned referendum on Catalonia’s independence from the mainland amid efforts by the central government to block the highly-anticipated vote.

People from towns and villages across Catalonia were traveling to the regional capital Barcelona on Sunday as the city was bracing for a mass march on the ‘Diada’ day of September 11, which is the day marking Barcelona’s fall to Spain in 1714.

Campaigners hope this year’s march, a tradition often used to voice demands for an independent state, would nullify efforts by the Spanish government to block the October 1 referendum.

Regional leaders have vowed to go ahead with the vote despite criticism from Madrid that it is illegal. Spain’s Constitutional Court issued a ruling last Thursday to suspend the referendum. That came after Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy legally challenged the vote and said Spain was constitutionally indivisible.’

Spain threatens to nab Catalan separatist mayors
http://presstv.com/Detail/2017/09/13/535036/Spain-Catalonia-Independence-Vote-

‘Spain’s state prosecutor on Wednesday ordered a criminal probe of Catalan mayors who cooperate with an October 1 independence referendum deemed illegal by Madrid and threatened to arrest those who do not comply.

The prosecutors’ office ordered the mayors who have agreed to help stage the vote be summoned to court as official suspects and if they do not appear to “order their arrest”, according to a copy of the ruling obtained by AFP.

Catalonia’s pro-separatist government has asked the wealthy northeastern region’s 948 mayors to provide facilities for polling stations for the plebiscite.’

‘Leaders of Spain’s independence-seeking Catalonia region have called for “dialog” with the central government in an effort to fend off a political crisis over an upcoming referendum on separation from the mainland.

In a Friday letter addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and King Felipe VI, Catalonia’s regional president Carles Puigdemont and Barcelona mayor Ada Colau complained that the state had mounted “an unprecedented repression offensive” against the autonomous region.

The letter also appealed for “political dialog, based on the legitimacy we all have, to make possible something that in a democracy is never a problem and even less a crime: listening to the voice of the people.”’

Spanish prosecutor seeks sedition charges for leaders of Catalan protests
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/09/22/spanish-prosecutor-seeks-sedition-charges-leaders-catalan-protests/

‘The Spanish attorney general’s office on Friday pushed for sedition charges against leaders of Barcelona protests that saw Guardia Civil vehicles vandalized and agents surrounded during a night of tensions over the arrests of Catalan officials.

The Spanish National Court was asked to investigated alleged sedition during protests that broke out across the city during a sweeping round of raids targeting pro-independence leaders on Wednesday. The crime carries a charge of up to 15 years in prison.

As protests continued to grip Barcelona, with demonstrators occupying the city’s University rectory on Friday, the Attorney of the National Court accused protesters of knowingly breaking the law in their bid to hold a banned independence referendum on Oct. 1.

At least 40,000 demonstrators descended on the Catalan department of economy as it was raided on Wednesday, blocking agents inside from leaving for up to nine hours until the judge who had ordered the operation made a midnight phone call to the head of the Catalan police.’

EU Commission silent as Madrid shuts down websites ahead of Catalonia referendum
https://www.euractiv.com/section/freedom-of-thought/news/commission-silent-as-madrid-shuts-down-websites-ahead-of-catalonia-referendum/

The European Commission remained silent on Tuesday (26 September) when confronted with the news that Spanish authorities had shut down websites that provide information about this weekend’s Catalan independence referendum. A vote that Spain still maintains is illegal.

With four days to go until the October 1 vote, the clash between Catalonia’s pro-separatist government and Madrid is increasingly being played out in the arena of logistics and international opinion.

Police have seized nearly 10 million ballots for the vote and have closed down 59 websites that provide information about the referendum. Another 85 sites are in the process of being closed, judicial sources said.

Perhaps a re-run of The Spanish Civil War, as Catalonia played a significant part in the past. Maybe this time AntiFa volunteers will go and fight for the Socialist Republicans. Thing is, who would volunteer to fight for the Fascists ?

Spain's PM dismisses Catalan's independence as a 'fairy tale' and warns: 'It is not peaceful, it is not free and will not be recognised by Europe'

'Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has dismissed Catalan's independence as a 'fairy tale' and warned it would not be recognised by Europe.

Today, he rejected any mediation to resolve the crisis over the break-away push and told parliament: 'There is no mediation possible between democratic law and disobedience, illegality,' he told parliament.

Catalonia's separatist leaders on Tuesday signed an independence declaration but said they were suspending it in the hope Madrid would negotiate.

Rajoy hit back, calling Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont's autonomy plan a 'fairy tale' and giving him until October 16 to confirm whether or not he has declared independence.

Rajoy added: 'It is not peaceful, it is not free, it will not be recognised by Europe and now everyone knows it will have costs,' he added.'

'Spain's top court has officially ruled that Catalonia's disputed independence referendum was illegal because a regional law that backed it was against Spain's constitution.

The Catalan regional parliament passed the so-called "self-determination referendum law" in early September.

Regional leaders went on to stage the October 1 referendum on whether the region should separate from Spain.

Spain's Constitutional Court had earlier suspended the law temporarily while judges assessed the Spanish government's objection to it.

In its ruling on Tuesday, the court said the law was against national sovereignty and the "indissoluble unity of the Spanish nation".

The court said that the parliamentary session that approved the law was also illegal.'

The Spanish government will revoke Catalonia's autonomy and take control of the region after its separatist leader refused to withdraw a bid to secede. President Carles Puigdemont had until this morning to abandon his 'suspended' declaration of independence, but chose instead to threaten the government with a regional parliamentary vote on a formal declaration. In response, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called a special cabinet meeting on Saturday when his government will trigger Article 155 of the Spanish constitution, his office said on Thursday.

Nearly half a million poured onto the streets of Barcelona today as Spain's Prime Minister outlined plans to impose direct rule over Catalonia and remove its leaders. Mariano Rajoy wants to sack the region's government and call an election within six months in a bid to thwart a break away by the autonomous region.

But his aggressive stance, which includes a threat to arrest the region's president if he declares independence, led to Catalan President Carles Puigdemont accusing him of the worst attack on the region 'since Franco'. Mentioning Spain's notorious fascist dictator, Mr Puigdemont branded the Spanish government's plans an 'attack on democracy' and accused Mr Rajoy of seeking to 'humiliate' Catalonia.

Catalans cannot accept the 'illegal' measures taken by the Spanish government, calling them 'the worst attack against the institutions and the people of Catalonia since the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco.'

'Spain's foreign minister has further inflamed tensions in the Catalonia referendum row by saying some videos showing police violence against voters were 'fake news'.

Alfonso Dastis, an independent politician and a legal adviser to the United Nations, told The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One: ‘There have been a lot of alternative facts and fake news here.’

Human Rights Watch responded by saying detailed investigations had found national police had used ‘excessive force’, with 991 people treated by Catalonia's health department after violence broke out during the independence vote.

Meanwhile, the Spanish government has been accused of launching a ‘fully-fledged coup’ after it announced plans to sack Catalan leaders and replace them with its own officials.

Prime minister Mariano Rajoy said the drastic move was to ‘restore order’ after the region held an independence referendum – but it triggered fresh protests.

Catalonia’s government said it would ‘fight tooth and nail’ against the ‘attack on democracy’. Spokesman Jordi Turull described the plans as ‘a fully-fledged coup against Catalan institutions’.'

Catalonia says it will defy orders from Spanish government when it imposes direct rule

'Catalonia will defy attempts by Madrid to enforce direct rule on the region in a dispute that is raising fears of unrest among Spain's European allies.

The Spanish government has invoked special constitutional powers to fire the regional government and force elections to counter an independence drive. A vote in the national Senate to implement direct rule is due on Friday.

But leaders of the secessionist campaign said a referendum on 1 October, in which 43 per cent of the electorate voted, gave them a mandate to claim independence from the rest of Spain.

"It's not that we will refuse [orders]. It is not a personal decision. It is a seven million-person decision," Catalonia's foreign affairs chief Raul Romeva told BBC News.

Mr Romeva was asked whether he believed all institutions, including the police, would follow orders from Catalan institutions rather than obey the Spanish government.'

'Catalonia's vice-president has said that the Spanish government has given them "no choice" but declare independence.

Oriol Junqueras said his party, one of the two in the ruling separatist coalition which forms the Catalan government, is "going to work toward building a republic" because they have a "democratic mandate" following a referendum earlier this month.

Madrid declared the referendum illegal and sent in its centralised police force, the Civil Guard, to stop people voting. Officers were seen firing rubber bullets at crowds and beating voters as they attempted to enter polling stations during the vote on 1 October.

Nearly 900 people were injured in the violence and the final result showed 92 per cent backed independence based on a turnout of 43 per cent.

Mr Junqueras was speaking for Republican Left party and not for the regional government as a whole, which is headed by President Carles Puigdemont.

Mr Puigdemont announced he would be delaying his declaration of independence – which was originally due to happen around a week after the vote – to seek negotiations with the Madrid government.'

Catalonia crumbles:
Ministers appointed by Spanish Prime Minister take over Catalan government as police chief is sacked and armed officers guard the regional parliament after night of violence on the streets of Barcelona

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5026353/Tensions-boil-streets-Barcelona.html

Spain has today seized control of Catalonia as ministers appointed by the Prime Minister have met to discuss their new roles in the region's sacked government. Catalonia's regional police chief Josep Trapero was removed from his post at around 4am this morning amid concerns that local police would resist the national force. Officers cast a ring of steel around the region's parliament in Barcelona as demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid in support of a united Spain.

It comes after unionists clashed with separatists in Barcelona last night as tens of thousands of Catalans celebrated the local government's declaration of independence. In one incident a pro-independence radio station was attacked with journalists forced to barricade themselves inside. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has stripped Catalonia's most senior police officials of their powers and taken control of its civil service, finances and public media ahead of snap local elections announced for December 21.

And Spain's top prosecutor has warned that the local politicians responsible for the independence vote could face treason charges and up to 25 years in prison, with arrests planned for as early as Monday. This morning thousands of unionists protesters took to Madrid's Plaza de Colon as they called for Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont to be jailed. Mr Rajoy announced that he had sacked the local government on television last night, adding that 'central government will assume the powers of the Catalonian administration'.

He said: 'Spain is living through a sad day. We believe it is urgent to listen to Catalan citizens, to all of them, so that they can decide their future and nobody can act outside the law on their behalf.

'Today, the Catalonia parliament has approved something that in the opinion of a large majority of people not only goes against the law but is a criminal act.'

Ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont fled to Brussels on Monday as his separatist movement collapsed and Spain's top prosecutor called for him to be charged with rebellion, sedition and embezzlement. Mr Puigdemont had vowed to defy Madrid by turning up to work despite threats of arrest and even uploaded a picture of the presidential palace roof to Instagram, but never appeared.

Five other sacked members of the Catalan government said to be with him in Brussels. Its being billed as a meeting with Flemish separatists but  there is growing speculation he may seek political asylum.

Belgian authorities had suggested that the ousted president could be granted asylum if he faced the threat of arrest in his home country. Former speaker Carme Forcadell did arrive at her office in Barcelona but only to announce parliament would be dissolving before she was ordered to 'immediately' hand herself over to police.

In another apparent climb down, Mr Puigdemont’s representative said his party would field candidates in the snap election on 21 December announced by Madrid. The party had said earlier that it did not respect the legitimacy of the election.

The extraordinary turn of events has shocked many in Catalonia, with unionists jubilant while many separatists reacted with a sense of anger and humiliation.

The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, said that his plan for taking control of Catalonia was 'going well'.

Re: Spain’s Catalonia Declares Independence - Its part of the "Heineken Plan"

The short version, merge a few big countries to create EU, then breakup those countries into Regions within the EU.

The United States of Europe, A Eurotopia?
The book proposes a federal United States of Europe, in which larger European countries break into a number of smaller, more ethnically and linguistically homogeneous states.

The plan gives a division of Europe in regions. Heineken went to Henk Wesseling for advise on the division, who was Professor of History at the University of Leiden. The designs from the plan were left to the Leiden historian Wim van den Doel. Eurotopia takes ethnic sensitivities into account, to cause the least possible amount of friction. The basic idea is a Europe that is completely composed of states with roughly 5 to 10 million citizens. According to Heineken, the absence of a powerful state would lead to a chance of more stability, equality and peace. While under the motto of small is beautiful, administration in the states could be more efficient.

My Kingdom for a Beer? Heineken's Eurotopia

Freddy Heineken (1923-2002), the Dutch tycoon who made his beer into a global brand, also was a dedicated Europhile. Towards the end of his life, he proposed reshuffling Europe’s national borders to strengthen the supranational project whose stated goal is an “ever closer union”.

Heineken collaborated with two historians to produce a booklet entitled “The United States of Europe, A Eurotopia?” The idea was timely, for two reasons. Eastern Europe was experiencing a period of turmoil, following the collapse of communism. The resulting wave of nationalism led to the re-emergence of several nation-states (i.e. the Baltics) and the break-up of several others (Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia). And in 1992, the Maastricht Treaty would transform an initially mainly economic “European Community” into a more political “European Union”.

Heineken’s proposal would lead to the creation of dozens of new European states, which would have a comparably small population size (mostly between 5 and 10 million), some basis in history, and for the most part would be ethnically homogenous.

The theory behind Heineken’s idea is that a larger number of smaller member-states would be easier to govern within a single European framework than a combination of larger states competing for dominance. Heineken might have been inspired by the work of Leopold Kohr, whose similar proposal was discussed earlier on this blog (#18).

Here is a list of countries proposed in the “Eurotopia” detailed by Heineken e.a., with their capital cities and population figures. Numbers correspond to the ones on the map:

Nah m8,
The answer is Gandhi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahatma_Gandhi) not Guns.
Guns are for problems like despots and tyrants Idie Amin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idi_Amin).
Besides which, we should be careful for what we wish for, as outlined above in the "Heineken Plan" (http://forum.globalgulag.com/index.php?topic=205.msg14469#msg14469)

If one person defeated the British Empire at the height of its powers, it was Gandhi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahatma_Gandhi).

Well, I'm not trying to knock down your argument or that Gandhi did some great things, but imperialism, in that form, was on the decline anyway. World opinion was in his favor. The Indians still kept the caste system by the way  :-\

In this instance I'm not implying violent protestors and anarchy in the streets with guns, but I think the federalis wouldn't have been so quick to take over had Catalonia had some form of militia ready to defend its "autonomous state."

Civil disobedience only goes so far. Hence, the Spanish federal government comes in with their guns.

Catalan seperatist leader Puigdemont faces Belgian extradition hearing

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2017/12/04/544408/Catalonia-Belgium-Extradition

'Axed Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont faces an extradition hearing in Belgium on Monday as Spain seeks to have him sent back to face sedition charges over his region’s independence drive.

A judge sitting behind closed doors in Brussels will hear from lawyers for Puigdemont and four of his former ministers, who all fled to Belgium in October despite a summons to appear in court in Spain, claiming they would not get a fair trial.

Prosecutors last month asked the judge to approve the European arrest warrant issued by Madrid for the five in the opening round of what could become a protracted courtroom battle.

Monday’s hearing comes on the eve of the official start of campaigning for December 21 elections in Catalonia, ordered by Madrid to “restore normality” to the wealthy northeastern region, which declared independence unilaterally following a hotly disputed October 1 referendum.

Puigdemont’s lawyer said at the weekend he will remain in Belgium until after the elections.'

Poll shows Catalan separatist will lose majority in elections

http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2017/12/10/545128/Catalonia-separatist-parties-election

'A new poll conducted just ahead of regional elections in Spain’s Catalonia suggests that separatist parties would lose their majority in the parliament.

The poll published in Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia on Sunday said the three separatist parties which dominated Catalonia’s parliament before the recent political crisis will narrowly fail to secure a majority in the elections slated for December 21.

The three parties, namely Ciudadanos, ERC and Junts per Catalunya, would gain 66 or 67 seats in the election, just shy of the 68 seats they would need to control the regional parliament, the poll found.

Lack of absolute majority would also be the case for unionist parties combined, the poll said. That would lead to a hung parliament where CatComu-Podem, a branch of Spain’s anti-austerity Podemos party in Catalonia, would become a kingmaker.

The poll, which has been based on interviews between December 4 and December 7, predicted a record turnout of 82 percent in the elections, which will come nearly two months after Spain launched a massive crackdown to nullify an independence declaration for the region.'

Capture of former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont sparks violent protests in Barcelona

'Five months after going on the run from Spanish authorities, Catalonia's former president was detained in Germany on an international warrant by highway police after the ardent separatist crossed the border with Denmark.

Carles Puigdemont's capture, aided by Spanish intelligence services, sparked protests of tens of thousands in Catalonia's main city of Barcelona and other towns in the wealthy northeastern corner of Spain. Some of the demonstrators clashed with riot police, leaving more than 50 civilians and police officers injured and leading to four arrests. Mr Puigdemont will appear before a German judge on Monday.

Spain was plunged into its worst political crisis in four decades when Mr Puigdemont's government flouted a court ban and held an ad-hoc referendum on independence for the northeastern region in October. Spam_A Spam_B The Catalan parliament's subsequent declaration of independence received no international recognition and provoked a takeover of the regional government by Spanish authorities that they say won't be lifted until a new government that respects Spain's Constitution is in place.

Spain's state prosecutor office said it was in contact with its German counterparts to carry out its request to extradite Mr Puigdemont to Spain, where he faces charges including rebellion that could put him in prison for up to 30 years.

In Barcelona, riot police shoved and struck protesters with batons to keep an angry crowd from advancing on the office of the Spanish government's representative. Police vans showed stains of yellow paint reportedly thrown by protestors. Reinforcements were called in after several hours to clear the neighbouring streets, with protestors tossing street barriers and burning two garbage bins as they retreated.'

More than 300,000 took to the streets of Barcelona on Sunday to demand that the Spanish government in Madrid release the Catalan independence movement leaders that are being held in detention ahead of the trial.

The protesters, carrying numerous Catalan flags, walked behind a huge banner reading: “For rights and liberties, for democracy and unity, we want them back home!” Many in the crowd also chanted: "Freedom for the political prisoners." Spam_A Spam_B

The rally was organized by the National Catalan Assembly and Omnium pro-independence groups, whose leaders, Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart, were arrested in Madrid six months ago. Sanchez and Cuixart may face up to 30 years in prison on rebellion charges.

Protests and tight security as Catalan separatists face hefty jail terms in Spain’s ‘trial of the century’

'Twelve Catalan separatists have appeared in court to face sedition charges carrying sentences of up to 25 years in prison in what Spanish media are calling the trial of the century.

Madrid’s Supreme Court was locked down by security officials as small but highly vociferous protests took place outside, both for and against the separatist leaders who are accused of crimes linked to their role in the region’s illegal independence referendum in 2017.

Police lined streets outside the plush neo-Georgian square where the court is based, as a group of some 100 pro-Catalan protesters hurled slogans in support of those on trial. Some protesters held up posters quoting Thomas Jefferson, saying (in Spanish): “When the law is unjust, rebellion becomes an obligation.” The night before the trial an unknown individual projected giant TV pictures of Spanish police charging demonstrators during the 2017 referendum onto the facade of the court building, under the title “Spanish democracy”.

Then, at exactly 10am, when the trial started, supporters of the far-right Falange movement unfurled a giant poster with caricatures of the 12 separatists as devils. Others yelled “Golpista!” [Coup plotter!] as Catalonia’s current leader, Quim Torra, entered the building to support those on trial.

“This is a trial against everybody’s civil rights, anybody who thinks this is only against the pro-independence movement is mistaken,” claimed Gabriel Rufian, an outspoken MP for the Catalan Republican Left, as police hustled a small group of separatists away.

“All we should ask is, ‘Who’s going to be next?’”

Mr Rufian’s party leader, former Catalan vice-president Oriol Junqueras, was one of the 12 inside the court. Mr Junqueras faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of rebellion and misuse of public funds.'

Spain's PM calls snap general election for 28 April
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/15/spains-pm-calls-snap-general-election-for-28-april

'Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called a snap election for 28 April after Catalan secessionists joined rightwing parties in rejecting the socialist government’s national budget earlier this week.

The country’s third general election in less than four years was seen as an inevitability following Sánchez’s defeat on Wednesday.

“Between doing nothing and continuing without the budget, and calling on Spaniards to have their say, I choose the second. Spain needs to keep advancing, progressing with tolerance, respect, moderation and common sense,” Sánchez said in a televised address to the nation following a cabinet meeting. “I have proposed to dissolve parliament and call elections for 28 April.” Sánchez’s PSOE, which holds 84 of the 350 seats in congress, relied on the support of Basque and Catalan nationalist parties to seize power from the conservative People’s party (PP) in a confidence vote last year.

But the two main Catalan pro-independence parties – the Catalan Republican Left and Catalan European Democratic party – voted with the PP and centre-right Citizens party on the budget, defeating it by 191 votes to 158, with one abstention.

A general election had been due next year.'

Politically Charged Show Trial of Catalan Independence Supporters
By Stephen Lendman
http://davidicke.com/article/522267/politically-charged-show-trial-catalan-independence-supporters

What’s billed as Spain’s “trial of the century” began in Madrid before the nation’s Supreme Court on Tuesday.

On trial are 12 activist Catalan politicians - falsely charged with rebellion, misuse of public funds, and civil disobedience.

They justifiably support the universal right of self-determination, shouldn’t have been arrested, imprisoned, and forced to stand trial for backing the legitimate rights of the Catalan people.

Under international law, people everywhere have the right to choose their sovereignty and political status with no outside interference.

The UN Charter affirms “the principle of equal rights and self-determination of people…”

Article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) states:

“All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.”

Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states “(e)veryone has the right to a nationality (self-determination). No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his (or her) nationality nor denied the right to change his (or her) nationality.”

Catalans, Spanish Basques, Kurds, Palestinians, Puerto Rican activists, and others elsewhere are entitled to seek self-determination, a fundamental principle under international law, regarded as jus cogens, a higher or compelling law.

In October 2017, Catalans overwhelming voted for independence by national referendum. Madrid and Spain’s Constitutional Court refused to recognize the results, defying international law.

A dozen Catalan separatist officials are on trial, nationally televised proceedings likely to last several months. At stake is whether Spain’s Supreme Court will uphold the legitimacy of self-determination, affirmed under international law. Results of the trial may affect other independence movements. Individuals on trial include illegally removed Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras, former Catalan parliament Speaker Carme Forcadell, activist politician Jordi Sanchez, activist Jordi Cuixart, along with eight former Catalan cabinet members.

Their politically charged trial is being held before a seven-judge Supreme Court panel, the court house heavily guarded, supporters of the defendants rallying outside, chanting and carrying signs saying: “Freedom for political prisoners.”

A smaller rival group disgracefully called them “coup plotters.” Defense attorney for two of the accused, Andreu Van den Eyndehe, told the court that his clients have the legal right to seek independence under international law, adding self-determination “is a synonym of peace, not of war.”

If convicted, defendants face up to 25 years in prison - for pursuing the legal right of the Catalan people to seek self-determination.

Seven other former Catalan officials are in self-imposed exile to avoid facing unjust prosecution, including former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont.

In Berlin on Tuesday, he called the trial a “stress test” for Spain’s democracy - like America in name only.

He also asked “why (the) European Union is more concerned by what is going on…in Venezuela than what is happening in Madrid,” adding:

“My political activity will be based in Belgium for the sake of freedom and independence of Catalonia and its people and ensuring its fair claims.”

The German High Court of Schleswig-Holstein state (where he was living in exile) ruled he could only be extradited if charged with misuse of public funds, rejecting the charge of rebellion against him because no evidence indicated that he intended to use force to seek Catalan independence.

German prosecutors still seek to extradite him to Spain. He’s subject to arrest if forced back. He vowed to continue fighting to prove his innocence, adding the German court rejected “the main lie of the state” against him, ruling that Catalonia’s self-determination referendum was not rebellion as Madrid claims.

Much rides on whether Spain’s Supreme Court delivers the same ruling, along with hopefully rejecting other wrongful charges against Catalan separatists on trial.

Carles Puigdemont to be excluded from European elections
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/apr/29/carles-puigdemont-excluded-european-elections-catalan

Puigdemont, who fled Spain to avoid arrest after his regional government’s unilateral independence referendum in October 2017, intended to run as a candidate in the European parliament elections for the Together for Catalonia platform.

Also on the list are former Catalan education minister Clara Ponsatí, and Toni Comín, who was health minister in Puigdemont’s administration. But it emerged on Monday that the electoral board had accepted a petition from the conservative People’s party and centre-right Citizens party that the trio’s candidacies be declared ineligible because all three are “fugitives” abroad.

Puigdemont and Comín are in Belgium, while Ponsatí is in Scotland. They face arrest in Spain for their alleged roles in the referendum and subsequent unilateral declaration of independence.

A spokesman for Puigdemont said an appeal would be launched.

“Together for Catalonia – Free for Europe intends to respond to this brazen violation of their fundamental right to stand as candidates by taking any necessary legal actions in Spain and Europe to defend the rights of all three candidates and the right of voters to cast their vote for this republican list,” he said.'

Tusk slammed for throwing shade at Moscow and ignoring the EU’s own political prisoners

'Donald Tusk has been accused of hypocrisy for using the Russia-Ukraine prisoner swap to call on Moscow to “release all political prisoners,” even though he doesn’t feel the same way about Catalan leaders jailed in the EU.

Thirty-five Russians were exchanged for 35 Ukrainians in an agreement reached after a series of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, with both sides welcoming Saturday’s release.

The President of the European Council tweeted that the release of Ukrainian sailors “fills me with relief,” adding, “I continue my call on Russia to release all political prisoners and respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.”

Spain is part of the EU...
That the EU has allowed this to happen is disgusting.
