Jeffrey Epstein plea deal must stand, prosecutors tell sex abuse victims

Suspected sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein was handed another break by the Department of Justice on Monday when federal prosecutors rejected his victims’ efforts to throw out his plea deal and prosecute him for abusing dozens of underage girls.

In the 35-page motion, filed in federal court in the Northern District of Georgia, federal prosecutors said that there is no legal basis to invalidate Epstein’s non-prosecution agreement — and they warned the federal judge in the case against doing the same.

U.S. Attorney Byung “B.J.” Pak said that because Congress did not outline specific penalties in the Crime Victims’ Rights Act when it was created by Congress, Epstein’s victims have no right to demand anything from the government — not even an apology. A federal judge ruled earlier this year that the plea deal violated that legislation.

In the filing, federal prosecutors did concede that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Florida failed to treat Epstein’s victims — most of whom were 13 to 16 years old when they were victimized — fairly, but they said that the law gives prosecutors discretion in deciding how to dispose of a case. Victims have a right to confer with prosecutors, but no rights beyond that, Pak said.

The federal judge in the case, Kenneth Marra, will have to decide what happens now.

Epstein, a politically connected financier, escaped federal sex-trafficking charges after his high-powered lawyers, led by Kenneth Starr and Alan Dershowitz, pressured prosecutors in Miami to work out a secret plea deal in 2007.

The controversial agreement, engineered by then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta, allowed Epstein to plead guilty to lesser charges in state court, resulting in a 13-month jail sentence on a single prostitution charge involving a girl who was 17. At the time, investigators had identified nearly three dozen victims.

Boris verus WHO ? NEVER HEARD OF HIM ?

Obviously you are all familiar with the one and only Boris. So who is this Jeremy Hunt character, eh ?

Jeremy Hunt identifies as a one-nation conservative, which sounds reasonable unless you remember Ted Heath. Background such as he did PPE at Oxford are hardly revelatory.

Hunt supported Britain remaining in the European Union (EU) in the 2016 referendum. After the result which supported Brexit was announced, Hunt suggested a second referendum on the terms of any exit deal with him personally backing one in which the UK would stay in the Single Market.

Wait for the slither . . .

In 2017 he stated that he had changed his mind, and now supported Brexit, citing the "arrogance of the EU Commission" in responding to the UK government in the Brexit negotiations.

In July 2018, Hunt expressed fears over the UK potentially leaving the EU without a deal.

Patrushev: Russia will oppose Kosovo's membership in Interpol
The secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Patrushev, stated on June 19 that Russia would support Serbia in the efforts to prevent Kosovo from joining Interpol.

During a meeting with Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, Patrushev promised that Moscow would support Belgrade at the forthcoming General Assembly of Interpol.

According to the statement by the Serbian Interior Ministry, Stefanovic stressed that Kosovo's repeated application for admission to Interpol was against the basic rules of the international police organization, and against Resolution 1244 of the U.N. Security Council.

Stefanovic said that "the latest raid of the north of Kosovo and Metohija by the Kosovo security forces is proof that Pristina cannot be expected to abide by international law, or the rules of Interpol."

"This is yet more proof that there is no rule of law in Kosovo, because of which the Serbs' safety is even more uncertain," Stefanovic pointed out.

The Justice Department wrote a brief in support of keeping the current infringements in place.   I am sure it was a coincidence that the Virginia Beach Shooting occurred just as this case was being petitioned before the court.  Just like it was a coincidence that Las Vegas shooting and shooting of congressman occurred when there was a push to unregulate silencers.

Supreme Court Declines to Hear Challenge to Federal Gun-Suppressor Restrictions

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a challenge to federal restrictions on gun suppressors, muzzle attachments that muffle the sound of a gunshot, leaving in place a law that requires such devices be registered.

The appeal came from Shane Cox, who owns a military-surplus store in Kansas, and Jeremy Kettler, who purchased a gun suppressor from him. The men were convicted under the National Firearms Act of failing to register the device but appealed the decision, saying the law infringes on their Second Amendment rights. The appeals court then ruled that a suppressor is not a “bearable” weapon protected under the Second Amendment.

Kettler said he bought the suppressor to avoid further harm to his hearing, which was damaged while he served in the military. He said Cox had led him to believe that suppressors made and sold in the same state were not required to be registered.

Controversy over suppressors flared at the end of last month after a gunman killed twelve near Virginia Beach using a firearm equipped with one of the devices, prompting Virginia’s governor to call for bans on them and on high-capacity magazines.

Bolton’s Brazen Iran Lies Never Stop

John Bolton is in Israel this weekend, and he continues to lie brazenly about Iran and its nuclear program:

“Iran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons, its threats to exceed the limits set in the failed Iran nuclear deal in the coming days … are not signs of a nation seeking peace,” Bolton told reporters during a visit to Israel.

Bolton frequently tells these lies in public, but he is almost never called out for them by the journalists in the room and news reports almost never explain that Bolton’s assertions are unfounded and untrue. The National Security Advisor has learned over the years that if he states things vehemently enough he tends to get away with lying about important foreign policy issues. Unfortunately, news outlets usually just quote his statements without offering any context or giving their audience the accurate information they need to recognize the deception Bolton is engaged in. News reports that quote Bolton on Iran should also mention that he was a paid advocate of the Mujahideen-e Khalq (MEK), a deranged cult of exiles that seeks regime change in Iran, and they should add that Bolton has a history of manipulating and distorting intelligence to suit his needs. There are multiple red flags that need to be raised every time Bolton talks about Iran so that the public won’t be misinformed, and most of the time all of them are omitted. No one has less credibility to talk about Iran than Bolton, but for some reason his statements are treated as if they are something more than dishonest propaganda delivered by a fanatic.
