Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hasn’t wasted the crisis presented by last month’s spree shooting in Nova Scotia in which a man dressed as a police officer murdered 22 people over 12 hours. As the Guardian reports, Prime Minister Zoolander had this to say earlier today about his shiny new “assault weapons” ban . . .

“These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada,” said the prime minister. “Effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade assault weapons in this country.”

This is what happens in a country without a Second Amendment. Note that no vote has taken place to enact the ban that covers 1500 different models and variants. As even the assiduously anti-gun Guardian notes . . .

The new ban would probably not have stopped [Nova Scotia killer Gabriel] Wortman from obtaining his weapons: he did not have a license to possess or purchase firearms, and police have said they believe the guns were obtained illegally in Canada and the United States.

Not that a detail like that really matters when you have a population to disarm.

From the CBC . . .

“As of today, the market for assault weapons in Canada is closed,” Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said. “Enough is enough. Banning these firearms will save Canadian lives.”

Trudeau said there will be a two-year amnesty period to allow people who already own these firearms to comply with the ban. Trudeau promised to pass legislation in the coming months to provide “fair compensation” to people who own these firearms.

The Liberal Party promised some sort of buyback program in the last election, something that could cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

Canada has a long gun registry (though it was mostly an expensive failure), so finding at least some of the newly outlawed firearms will be easier for the Canucks than it was for the Kiwis.

Please note that the Nova Scotia shooting did not use any assault weapons !@
And semi auto is their definition of "military assault" weapon ... ie a hunting rifle ...

A petition to stop the Liberal government of Canada implementing a ban on “military-style assault rifles” has reached 153,000 signatures – well over six times bigger than any previous petition. The petition opened on Dec. 17, 2019, and will close on Feb. 15, 2020.

Prominent law enforcement officers have stated that a ban will have little effect. “When we seize handguns, the handguns are always, almost 100-percent, in the possession of people who have no legal right to possess them. They’re almost always stolen or illegally obtained,” said Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Rob Carver earlier this month.

In 2019, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police did not support the call for a ban on handguns. Vancouver police chief Adam Palmer, who heads the organization, said Canada already has strong firearms regulations and no other law is required.

Community groups in Toronto also agree, attributing the increase in crime in their city to poverty, racism, issues in the education system and lack of job opportunities, especially for young people.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday banned 1,500 models of military-style assault weapons in Canada, nearly two weeks after the deadliest mass shooting in the country's history.

Canadians are no longer allowed to buy, sell, use, transport or import those types of weapons, Trudeau said. Owners of those guns will have a two-year amnesty period to surrender the weapons, and Parliament will pass legislation to provide them with “fair compensation,” he said.

But gun owners also will have the option to have their weapons "grandfathered" under the new requirements, senior Canadian officials said. They did not provide more details on the buyback program or on grandfathering, which they said are still being worked out.

Officials advised owners not to surrender their firearms to police stations during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trudeau's announcement comes after nearly two dozen people were killed April 18 and 19 by a gunman in Nova Scotia, Canada's deadliest mass shooting since the 1989 murders of 14 women at the École Polytechnique in Montreal. The Nova Scotia shooter reportedly obtained some of his weapons from the U.S., which has been beset by a series of mass shootings in recent years but has yet to enact significant changes to its national gun laws.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his governing Liberal Party promised the biggest series of gun confiscations in Canadian history.

The plans threaten to jail hundreds of thousands of safe and responsible men and women unless they surrender their firearms.

Trudeau is targeting the 2.2 million adults with a federal firearm Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) who use guns safely and responsibly. His plan will also seize guns from stores.

Nova Scotia gunman shot dead after at least 18 killed in 'senseless' and 'random' attack

The toll exceeds the 14 dead at École Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989, making this the deadliest spree killing in Canadian history.

#Colchester: Gabriel Wortman may be driving what appears to be an RCMP vehicle & may be wearing an RCMP uniform. There's 1 difference btwn his car and our RCMP vehicles: the car #. The suspect's car is 28B11, behind rear passenger window. If you see 28B11 call 911 immediately.

One officer was on one knee on top of the vehicle and had his assault rifle pointed into the car through the sunroof.
It is not known how Wortman died.

The RCMP identified the perpetrator as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman

Wortman pleaded guilty to assault in 2002 and was sentenced to nine months of probation, in which he was prohibited from possessing weapons and ordered to undergo anger management counselling

On May 1, Trudeau announced that the sale, transportation, importation, or use of military-grade assault weapons in Canada was now banned effective immediately, via re-classification as "Prohibited" under the Firearms Act, with a two-year amnesty period to allow current owners to dispose of them or apply for their ownership to be grandfathered in. The prohibition applies to at least 1,500 models, including the AR-15 and guns that had been used in other notable mass shootings in Canada, such as the Ruger Mini-14 (École Polytechnique massacre), the Beretta Cx4 Storm (Dawson College shooting), and the CSA vz. 58 (Quebec City mosque shooting)
