Wagamama launches a VEGAN full English breakfast complete with beetroot sausages and 'bacon' made from gluten - but would it replace YOUR fry up?

* The new dish will be launched at Gatwick and Heathrow airport on 6 February
* It is also comprised of scrambled turmeric tofu and sautéed sweet potato
* The move echoes Greggs, who released their meat-free sausage roll in January

‘Vegan’ is out, ‘plant-based’ is in as a softer sell to mainstream consumers

https://oregonlive.com/food/2019/02/vegan-is-out-plant-based-is-in-as-a-softer-sell-to-mainstream-consumers.html

Making the rounds at the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco last month, Phil Lempert couldn’t help but notice a curious pattern in the myriad chips and protein bars and truffle brie and deli meats on display.

The trade show is a harbinger of bubbling trends, and this winter's edition brought foods made from pea protein, beets, chickpeas and cashews. Yep, the vegan offerings were ascendant. But they were also vastly different from the strangely pink faux hot dogs and slabs of phony bologna that Lempert, a veteran food industry analyst, had observed for decades.

These foods were creative and snacky, he recalls, and moreover, many weren't even being billed as vegan. They were "plant-based."

"The hottest trend was clearly plant-based everything - beverages, cheeses, imitation meats," Lempert says.

The next time you're at the grocery store, take a closer look at the shelves. Products emblazoned with the term are popping up in every aisle and in every form: plant-based plantain yogurts, seitan sausages, kale chips, pea-protein shakes, oat milks. The number of new U.S. food and drink products that mentioned "plant-based" grew 268 percent between 2012 and 2018, according to consumer research company Mintel.

No this is scary ...

They're coloured a little funny because I incorrectly soaked them in white-vinegar for a while.
You only need to do that with Beef-kidneys. These were Lamb kidneys.

I fervently adopted vegetarianism aged 17, it was 'cool' then, at college. Now aged 61, having ¼ normal the ferritin (blood iron levels) not due to vegetarianism but other reasons; I thought to try a little meat. Kidneys. Sunday evening's Chou-down.
This was disgusting. I was absolutely nauseous to my stomach. Served with Spinach, spuds, rice & plenty of Patak's spice condiments ... anything to disguise the bloody damn thing.

And yes, I'm going back to Bean-Stews. I'm not political about my diet.
I don't force my ideas on others; as I believe it's not an 'enlightened route' to anything.
My MO requires that I re-establish & renew my own core/kernel beliefs alone, by subjecting myself to PURE REVULSION.

The revulsion quickly disappeared, as soon as the meat was in the pan.

I did eat it, fried in a skillet of course. I don't like waste or a mess ...(sic).
And I understand a starving person in the desert would really appreciate a lump of flesh if it meant not dying. Notwithstanding the neat pre-prepared meats in packs, I know it's not for me.
I can't say it was very enjoyable, though it tasted like part of a classic 'mixed-grill'. I'd have preferred a selection of beans, anytime, immediately. It's just bloody unnecessary in my mind.

I don't live in a cave, and even when I did (metaphor), I was still a vegetarian. Once, when I did go out to a freshly-killed lamb-barbecue at a farming neighbour's, I spent the next two days nursing the most horrific head-ache. Something in me is speaking very loud about meat not being suitable. As I said, I don't force my dietary ideas on others, I just have to remind myself once every 20yrs, why I hold them, at all.

And it's just the preparation, which was at an existential level, (on so many levels) absolutely diabolical.
That's all I can say on it. The classic argument that you never have to deal with total gore, in these days of convenience ...

Watch how the Daily Mail is playing both sides.

The technique is to simply push Veganisim into the public debate, which is why they are so duplicitous.

While I can not find the motivation to religiously post every example every day, its a very real pattern.

‘Veggie discs’ to replace veggie burgers in EU crackdown on food labels
http://www.theguardian.com/food/2019/apr/04/eu-to-ban-non-meat-product-labels-veggie-burgers-and-vegan-steaks

'Veggie burgers are for the chop, a Brussels committee has decreed, to be replaced by the less palatable-sounding “veggie discs”.

And it won’t be just bean or mushroom burgers condemned to the food bin of history. Vegan sausages, tofu steaks and soya escalopes could all be approaching their ultimate best-before date, after a vote in the European parliament on revisions to a food-labelling regulation.

In a move that some MEPs suspect bears the fingerprints of the meat industry, the parliament’s agriculture committee this week approved a ban on producers of vegetarian food using nomenclature usually deployed to describe meat. The protected designations would include steak, sausage, escalope, burger and hamburger, under a revised regulation that passed with 80% approval. The measures will now be voted on by the full parliament after May’s European elections, before being put to member states and the European commission.

The French socialist MEP Éric Andrieu, responsible for overseeing the legislation, said the prohibition was just “common sense” and he appealed to Europeans’ sense of foodie history.

“The meat lobby is not involved in this,” he said. “It has generated a considerable debate among the political groups and a large majority wanted to clarify things. Particularly in the light of history, the history we share, you can have a steak or burger, you can’t call it something else.”

The decision to protect meat-related terms and names “exclusively for edible parts of the animals” was firmly opposed by NGOs such as Greenpeace and Birdlife who insisted it presented a blow against sustainable food.'

Group of biologists tries to bury the idea that plants are conscious
http://www.theguardian.com/science/2019/jul/03/group-of-biologists-tries-to-bury-the-idea-that-plants-are-conscious

'The gardening gloves are off. Frustrated by more than a decade of research which claims to reveal intentions, feelings and even consciousness in plants, more traditionally minded botanists have finally snapped. Plants, they protest, are emphatically not conscious.[br][br]The latest salvo in the plant consciousness wars has been fired by US, British and German biologists who argue that practitioners of “plant neurobiology” have become carried away with the admittedly impressive abilities of plants to sense and react to their environments.[br][br]While plants may curl their leaves in response to touch, grow faster when competitors are near and spring traps when prey wanders into them, the vexed biologists argue that is no reason to believe they choose their actions, learn along the way or occasionally get hurt in the process, as some plant neurobiologists assert. Bothered by claims that plants have “brain-like command centres” in their root tips, and possess the equivalent of animal nervous systems, the critics counter there is no proof of sentient vegetation or structures within plants that would grant them what the neuroscientist Antonio Damasio has called “the feeling of what happens”.[br][br]Writing in the journal Trends in Plant Science, where plant neurobiology made its debut in 2006, Lincoln Taiz, a botanist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and seven like-minded researchers state: “There is no evidence that plants require, and thus have evolved, energy-expensive mental faculties, such as consciousness, feelings, and intentionality, to survive or to reproduce.”

Taiz told the Guardian: “Our criticism of the plant neurobiologists is they have failed to consider the importance of brain organisation, complexity and specialisation for the phenomenon of consciousness.”'

No need to reach for a calculator to realise the math is well wrong, as current world population is 7.7 billion and we already produce more than enough food - its how we fail to fairly share the food that is the real problem.

Humans must adopt vegetarian or vegan diets to stop climate change, UN report warns

* Current food system accounts for between 25 and 30% of greenhouse gases
* To feed 9.8bn people on Earth in 2050, world needs 56% more food than 2010
* Experts have warned this would involve converting 6million sq km to agriculture

The world must turn towards healthy plant-based diets to stop climate change, a UN-backed report has warned. Our food system accounts for between 25 and 30 per cent of greenhouse gases, and is choking the life from fresh and coastal waterways with excess nitrogen.

In order to feed the predicted 9.8 billion people on Earth in 2050, the world will need to produce 56 per cent more food compared to 2010. If the level of meat and dairy consumption rises in line with current food habits, six million square kilometres (2.3 million square miles) of forests would need to be converted to agriculture - an area twice the size of India.

Two-thirds would be changed to pasture land, with the final third being used for crops, according to the Creating a Sustainable Food Future report.

Trendy vegan diets could LOWER IQ due to lack of a nutrient that is critical to brain health, leading nutritionist warns
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-7407269/Momentum-veganism-threatening-brain-health-UK-expert-warns.html

Trendy vegan diets could be putting the IQ of the next generation at risk, a leading nutritionist has warned. Dr Emma Derbyshire said the growing fad for 'plant-based' diets risks creating mass deficiency in choline – a dietary nutrient that is critical to brain development.

Choline, found in meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, is particularly important in pregnancy, when it contributes to the healthy growth of a baby's brain. Dr Derbyshire, writing in the BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health journal, warned of the 'unintended consequences' of moving away from diets based on meat and dairy.
