France gets tough with UK, demands BoJo sign up to EU rules in return for Brexit trade deal – reports



French President Emmanuel Macron has told the European Commission that British PM Boris Johnson needs to agree to abide by EU rules for tax, state aid, the environment and social standards, the Telegraph reports.

Agreeing to dynamic alignment means Britain would change its laws to mirror Brussels’ rules, accordingly, over time, but without a say at the table over the drafting of those standards.

France wants dynamic alignment across the board,”one EU diplomat said.

Brussels is worried that the UK will begin ripping up EU regulations instead of maintaining a “level playing field”– resulting in an unfair competitive advantage for Britain.

The seemingly hardline position adopted by Paris may raise a few eyebrows in London, but they aren’t the only ones who are reportedly unsatisfied with Johnson’s opening offer of a “Canada-style”agreement. It’s thought that around 16 to 17 other EU nations are unhappy with the UK’s current safeguards.

The EU’s 2009 agreement with Canada is called the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The deal gets rid of most taxes on imports but tariffs remain on poultry, meat, and eggs. On standards there is not dynamic alignment, only “cooperation”between the two countries.

Looking him up . . .

Former Prime Minister of Australia. Went to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and did PPE - Philosophy, Politics and Economics. So not an intellectual lightweight, got some grey cells between his ears. Showed some signs of a moral backbone, though his domestic politics of course are not to every bodies taste.

On the plus side, out spoken Monarchist, out spoken Climate Change Critic, Champion of Aboriginal Rights, opposed Illegal Immigration, none of which are populist and indicate he holds some beliefs as opposed to just holding his hand out for bribes. He also dared to politely oppose Same Sex Marriage - with the caveat that he respected peoples rights and he advocated a referendum.

Reading his biography, it seems pretty certain that he must have Triggered "The Woke" on a massive scale.

Anyway, a staunch Brexiteer joins the team. But for the opposition, the Remainers, he is a cartoon ideological enemy.

Nigel Farage has hailed Brexit as “an epic triumph for the people against the political classes” and “the beginning of the end of the European Union” — but warned that

Boris Johnson’s deal is “not what I campaigned for and it most certainly is not what Boris Johnson’s supporters voted for in the 2019 General Election.”

Reflecting on the seemingly interminable years from the vote to Leave the European Union back in 2016 to Britain actually leaving the European Union, first in name only and now, as the 2020 “transition” period comes to an end, more substantively, the political heavyweight seemed relieved that his long battle for national independence appears to be coming to an end.

“I think that historians will look back on the 2016 to 2019 period in astonishment,” Farage suggested in an article for the Mail on Sunday.

“Whether it was the BBC, then Commons Speaker John Bercow, or hundreds of backbench MPs, a stubborn refusal to respect the outcome took hold,” he recalled.

“When I launched the Brexit Party as a means to re-establish our tattered democracy, the wave of support was immediate. Millions of pounds were donated in small sums online.

“The huge victory we scored in the 2019 European election led to Theresa May’s resignation and the premiership of Boris Johnson.”

Johnson, who picked a side in the EU referendum campaign late, and had previously been an EU supporter — even going so far as to campaign for Turkish membership of the bloc in order to refashion something resembling the long-departed Roman Empire — has not always earned high praise from Farage, whose commitment to the cause was never in doubt, but the arch-Brexiteer credited the Prime Minister and ally Michael Gove for having helped to finish the job.

Brexit leader Nigel Farage released footage at the weekend of what appear to be the first illegal boat migrants landing in Britain following the country’s departure from the European Union.

In releasing the footage, Mr Farage remarked on social media: “New year, same scandal” as British Border Force officials were seen taking the migrants ashore after travelling across the English Channel from France.

BBC reporter Simon Jones confirmed the crossings on Sunday, saying that there were 10 migrants brought ashore at the Port of Dover on Saturday.

Jones reported that the Home Office claimed that French officials had stopped an additional twenty migrants from making the treacherous journey.

A spokesman for the Home Office said: “We have already made changes to the Immigration Rules which ensured that when the UK was no longer subject to the Dublin Regulation, there is continuity in our legal powers to treat cases as inadmissible if they involve a claimant who has travelled through the EU.”

Following Brexit, the UK should be able to start rejecting asylum claims from migrants intercepted at sea, however, some lawmakers have called on the government to implement a ‘stop the boats’ policy, such as the one implemented in Australia.

The Conservative Party MP for Dover and Deal, Natalie Elphicke said: “We need the French to stop the boats leaving in the first place, return boats in the Channel to France instead of bringing them into Britain, and return people who come into our country through these routes.”
