Donald Trump to be blocked from easing Russia sanctions after US Congress agrees legislation

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 24 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/420638/donald-trump-blocked-easing-russia-sanctions-us-congress-agrees-legislation

‘Both Democrat and Republican leaders in the US Congress have agreed on legislation to punish Russia for election meddling.

The new legislation would effectively prevent Donald Trump’s from unilaterally lifting any sanctions on Moscow, which he previously said he needed to do for the sake of diplomacy between the two nations.

While the US President could veto the bill, doing so would fuel suspicion he is too supportive of Vladimir Putin’s federal republic.

The legislation, which will be voted on by the House of Representatives on Tuesday, would allow new sanctions against Russia for its annexation of Crimea in 2014 as well as its alleged meddling in the US election.

The bill would also include sanctions against Iran and North Korea.’

Trump Is Being Moved Aside So That Conflict with Russia Can Proceed

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 28 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421216/trump-moved-aside-conflict-russia-can-proceed

‘What is the Congress up to with their stupid bill that imposes more sanctions and removes the power of President Trump to rescind the sanctions that President Obama imposed?

Congress is doing two things. One is that Congress is serving their campaign contributors in the military/security complex by being tougher with Russia, thus keeping the orchestrated threat alive so that Americans denied health care don’t start looking at the massive military/security budget as a place to find money for health care.

The other is to put President Trump in a box. If Trump vetoes this encroachment on presidential power, Congress and the presstitute media will present the veto as absolute proof that Trump is a Russian agent and is protecting Russia with his veto. If Trump does not veto the bill, Trump will have thrown in his hand and accepted that he cannot reduce the dangerous tensions with Russia.

In other words, the bill is a lose-lose for Trump. Yet Republicans are supporting the bill, thus undermining their president.’

Is the US Trying to Start a Hot War with Russia?

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 28 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421213/us-trying-start-hot-war-russia

‘Another day, another major escalation of tensions caused by US actions. The recent downing of a Syrian jet by a US F-18 Super Hornet, is just the latest installment in a series of US provocations in Syria since Donald Trump took office in January.

The ‘non-interventionist’ Commander-in-Chief has continued and expanded the wars launched by previous US leaders, as Trump has essentially given the military carte blanche to do whatever it wants. From using white phosphorus in Iraq and Syria, to sending thousands more troops into Afghanistan, the US military machine remains completely out of control.

But why did an American fighter jet shoot down a Syrian warplane? Whilst the US – which is operating illegally in Syria – justified the action by saying that the Syrian jet was targeting US-backed forces on the ground (in the form of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)), the Syrian government said that the jet was on a mission against ISIS militants (who were created thanks to US-backing).

Understandably, Russia responded furiously to the illegal US action. Aleksey Pushkov, the head of Russia’s Communications Policy Committee, described the strike as an “act of war.”’

New US Russia sanctions ‘absolutely unacceptable,’ come at expense of EU jobs – Austrian chancellor

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 28 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421210/new-us-russia-sanctions-absolutely-unacceptable-come-expense-eu-jobs-austrian-chancellor

‘The Austrian chancellor has joined the chorus of EU officials criticizing the latest US sanctions against Russia, saying it is “absolutely unacceptable” for his country to cave in to Washington’s policies at the expense of European jobs.

“I consider the Russia sanctions imposed by the US absolutely unacceptable,” Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. “Confusing political interests with economic interests at the expense of European jobs is a no-go.”

“Energy supply of Europe is a matter for Europe!” Kern added.

The new anti-Russian sanctions are outlined in an amendment to a wider bill imposing measures against Iran. It was approved by the US House of Representatives on July 25 by an overwhelming majority of 419-3, but still needs to pass the US Senate and be signed by the president to become law.

The legislation seeks to introduce individual sanctions for contributing in Russian energy projects, and targets major sectors of Russia’s economy, including the defense, railway and banking industries. It also outlines steps to hamper the construction of the Gazprom-run flagship gas pipeline project Nord Stream 2.’

Russia retaliates over new US sanctions

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 29 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421345/russia-retaliates-new-us-sanctions

‘Russia retaliated Friday for new sanctions from Washington by announcing it would seize US properties and demand a reduction in American diplomatic staff, according to reports.

The Kremlin took the tit-for-tat action in the wake of the US Senate vote to slap new financial sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea over President Trump’s objections.

The bill awaits the president’s signature.

Russian officials said the US Embassy in Moscow and consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok must cut the number of their “diplomatic and technical employees” to 455 by Sept. 1, the Washington Post reported.

That staffing level would equal the number of Russian diplomatic staff in the US.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said it would seize a Moscow warehouse and recreation complex used by the American Embassy.’

A Ray of Hope. EU Backlash against Washington’s Sanctions Regime directed against Russia

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 29 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421348/ray-hope-eu-backlash-washingtons-sanctions-regime-directed-russia

‘America has been a discouraging landscape ever since the neoconservatives took over US foreign policy during the Clinton regime and started the two decades of war crimes that define 21st century America and ever since US corporations betrayed the US work force by moving American jobs to Asia.

The outlook became darker when the Obama regime resurrected the Russian Threat and elevated the prospect of military conflict between the nuclear powers.

As Europe is caught in the middle, in normal circumstances European countries would have insisted that Washington cease the gratuitous provocations of Russia. But normal circumstances have not existed. Since the end of WW2, European countries have been vassals without independent economic and foreign policies.

Europe hosts US military bases that threaten Russia. Europe has backed Washington’s wars of aggression against Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Washington’s air attacks on provinces of Pakistan, and Washington’s use of Saudi Arabia to fight its proxie war against Yemen.’

Vladimir Putin expels 755 US diplomats from Russia and threatens further action over sanctions

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 31 JULY 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421568/vladimir-putin-expels-755-us-diplomats-russia-threatens-action-sanctions

‘Vladimir Putin on Sunday said the United States would have to cut 755 diplomatic staff in Russia and warned of a prolonged gridlock in its ties after the US Congress backed new sanctions against the Kremlin.

The Russian president added bluntly that Russia was able to raise the stakes with America even further, although he hoped this would be unnecessary.

A US State Department official denounced the move as a “regrettable and uncalled for act,” adding that Washington was now weighing a potential response.

On Friday, the Russian foreign ministry demanded Washington cut its diplomatic presence in Russia by September 1 to 455 people – the same number Moscow has in the US.’

Trump signs what he calls ‘seriously flawed’ bill imposing new sanctions on Russia

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 3 AUGUST 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421982/trump-signs-calls-seriously-flawed-bill-imposing-new-sanctions-russia

‘President Trump on Wednesday signed a bill that imposes new sanctions on Russia, ending immediate hopes that he might be able to reset U.S. relations with the Kremlin as Congress overruled his opposition to the provisions’ curb on his executive power.

Trump’s reluctant signing of the legislation came nearly a week after it was approved by an overwhelming, bipartisan majority in the Senate and after a similarly large majority in the House. The president issued two statements outlining his concerns with the bill, which he called “seriously flawed,” primarily because it limits his ability to negotiate sanctions without congressional approval.

“By limiting the Executive’s flexibility, this bill makes it harder for the United States to strike good deals for the American people, and will drive China, Russia, and North Korea much closer together,” Trump said in a statement on Wednesday morning. “The Framers of our Constitution put foreign affairs in the hands of the President.

“This bill will prove the wisdom of that choice,” he added.’

‘Full-fledged economic war’: Medvedev slams Trump’s ‘humiliating’ cave-in on Russia sanctions

BY ANDREW CHEETHAM ON 3 AUGUST 2017 GMT
https://www.davidicke.com/article/421985/full-fledged-economic-war-medvedev-slams-trumps-humiliating-cave-russia-sanctions

‘The US establishment has fully outwitted Donald Trump and used his administration’s weakness to declare a fully-fledged economic war on Russia, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said, adding, that the move leaves no doubt that bilateral ties will never improve.

On Wednesday, Donald Trump signed into law a bill imposing new sanctions on Russia, which Medvedev says has put an end to “hopes for improving our relations with the new US administration.”

“It is a declaration of a full-fledged economic war on Russia,” he wrote in a lengthy strong-worded Facebook post in both English and Russian. “Unless a miracle happens,” the law will affect US-Russian relations for decades, Medvedev wrote.

Warning Washington of a “few consequences,” the Russian prime minister called out the White House’s “weakness” and inability to withstand internal political pressure.

The “Trump administration has shown its total weakness by handing over executive power to Congress in the most humiliating way,” Medvedev wrote.

“This changes the power balance in US political circles,” Medvedev wrote, asserting that the US establishment’s end game is to remove Trump from office.’

The U.S. doesn’t recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea and won’t lift sanctions related to Moscow’s military incursion into Ukraine until the peninsula is returned, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.

“We do not recognize Russia’s attempt to annex Crimea,” Sanders told reporters at the White House. U.S. sanctions “will remain in place until Russia returns Crimea to the Ukraine,” adding that “we agree to disagree with Russia on that front.”

President Donald Trump has suggested that U.S. recognition of Crimea as Russian territory could be on the table ahead of his July 16 summit in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We’re going to have to see,” Trump said on Friday when asked directly if the U.S. would accept Russia’s claim on the Black Sea peninsula.

Sanders would not say whether Crimea could be discussed at the summit.

National Security Adviser John Bolton said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday that it’s “not the position of the United States” that Crimea is Russian territory.

“The president often says ‘we’ll see’ to show he’s willing to talk to foreign leaders about a range of issues and hear their perspective,” Bolton said. Pressed on whether the U.S. position on Crimea could change, Bolton said “we’ll see.”

“The president makes the policy, I don’t make the policy,” he said.
