US-led Coalition Admits It Has Lost Race For Border With Iraq To Syrian Army

https://southfront.org/us-led-colaition-admits-lost-race-border-iraq-syrian-army/

Last Friday, the US-led officially admitted that it lost a race for the Syrian-Iraqi border to the Syrian Army and its allies.

Now, the US welcomes the Syrian effort to defeat ISIS.

The Associated Press (source):

The U.S. military coalition fighting the Islamic State would welcome a concerted effort by the Syrian government or its Iranian-backed partner forces to defeat IS in its remaining strongholds in eastern Syria, a U.S. spokesman said Friday.

Army Col. Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the coalition, told reporters at the Pentagon that the U.S. goal is to defeat IS wherever it exists. If others, including the Syrian government and its Iranian and Russian allies, want to fight the extremists as well, then “we absolutely have no problem with that,” he said, speaking from Baghdad.

“If it looks like they are making a concerted effort to move into ISIS-held areas, and if they show that they can do that, that is not a bad sign,” Dillon said, referring to forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad. “We are here to fight ISIS as a coalition, but if others want to fight ISIS and defeat them, then we absolutely have no problem with that.”

The statement followed a clear collapse of the US-backed plan to build a militant-held buffer zone between the areas controlled by the Syrian army and Iraqi government forces at the Syrian-Iraqi border.

Syrian War Report – June 26, 2017: Israel Supports Militant Advance In Quneitra

https://southfront.org/syrian-war-report-june-26-2017-israel-supports-militant-advance-in-quneitra/

Last weekend, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied groups from the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) launched a large-scale advance against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the province of Quneitra. The militants had formed an operation room named Jaysh Muhammad for the purpose and said that their aim was to capture al-Baath town and to reach the countryside of Damascus.

On Saturday, the joint militant forces made some gains against the SAA and even claimed that they seized over a half of al-Baath. However, further clashes showed that HTS and their allies were not able to break the government defenses.

Following a fail of the militant advance, the Israeli Air Force conducted airstrikes on government positions in the province claiming that some projectiles landed in the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights. The airstrikes targeted undefined number of artillery pieces and two battle tanks of the SAA.

On Sunday, the Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes on the SAA in Al-Baath in Quneitra province for the second day in a row under the same pretext. According to the Israeli military, the airstrikes hit artillery positions and an ammunitions truck.

Following the Israeli strikes, militants launched the second large-scale attempt to break government defense lines in al-Baath but failed to achieve any gains.

On Monday, the Israeli media reported that more projectiles landed in the Israeli-held area and that the Israeli Air Force responded with more airstrikes on SAA positions in the province. If confirmed, this was the third time in a row when the Israeli Air Force delivered airstrikes against Syrian government forces in the area.

At the same time, reports appeared HTS and its allies once again launched an attack against the SAA in al-Baath.

Syrian experts describe the Israeli actions as a clear assistance to the terrorist group fighting the legitimate Syrian government in the border area. According to them, Tel Aviv is deeply concerned over successful SAA operations against ISIS and other militants across Syria. Thus, it takes measures to undermine the Syrian war on terror.

Meanwhile, the SAA Tiger Forces have successfully advanced against ISIS at the Ithriyah-Resafa road. They liberated Bir Abu Alaj, the Syriatel checkpoint and some nearby points, becoming close to a full liberation of the road. This advance is an important step aimed at securing the whole area east of Khanasir.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have continued storming the ISIS-held city of Raqqah. They encircled the city from the southern flank and clashing with ISIS inside it, including the southern part of the 17th Army Base.

ISIS terrorists used at least 3 VBIEDs against SDF units in Al-Jazra and Al-Idikhar districts of the city. Clashes are also ongoing in Al-Qadisiya and Al-Yarmouk districts.

ANOTHER DAY IN THE EMPIRE

Mike Pence Meets Secretly with “Libertarian” Swamp Critter Charles Koch

June 24, 2017

On Friday, vice president Mike Pence traveled to Colorado Springs to meet with Charles Koch.

The Hill reports:

Pence, in town to headline a banquet celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Christian conservative group Focus on the Family, sat down with the chairman and chief executive of Koch Industries, along with key members of the Koch team.

The Hill describes the Koch brothers as libertarian, and yet they didn’t support the 2016 Libertarian Party candidate, Gary Johnson.

Recall Charles Koch saying he would support Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. Does this sound even vaguely libertarian?

During the election, Koch threw his weight behind Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, former Florida governor Jeb Bush and Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Marco Rubio of Florida.

All are establishment Republicans. None, with the exception of Rand Paul, even approach libertarianism.

Donors to the Koch network and summit attendees represent a virtual who’s who of the establishment and corporate interests.

The short list:

    • Marco Rubio
    • Rich DeVos (Amway)
    • Charles Schwab
    • Steve and Betty Bechtel (the Bechtel Group)
    • Ed Meese (Heritage Foundation)
    • Glenn Beck
    • Charles Krauthammer
    • Rick Perry

Representatives from banking, investment, think tanks (including the American Enterprise Institute), big oil, health insurance, and other corporate interests also attend Koch donor summits. Big media—Associated Press, Bloomberg News, The Washington Post, CNN, Politico, and others—attend Koch meetings as well.

This is a cross section of the establishment, not a group of libertarians.

Recall how the Koch brothers infiltrated the original tea party movement and turned it into a cheering section for the Republican party. Libertarian tea party activists were summarily ejected. Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks took over.

There are not any libertarians in the Trump administration. He does have plenty of Goldman Sachs bankers and Council on Foreign Relations operatives, though.

“In addition to the establishment heavyweights Trump has already met with—including the former US Secretary of State and member of the influential Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Henry Kissinger, and the former Director of Policy Planning at the State Department and current head of the CFR, Richard Hass—Trump’s official advisory teams on both foreign and economic policy reveal some troublesome connections to the neocons, Wall Street, Soros and the CFR,” Steve MacMillan wrote last August.

Here is a list of CFR folks in his administration.

Mike Pence is a consummate insider, so it should come as no surprise he sat down with Koch.

Draining the swamp is little more than a cruel joke. In fact, it was nothing more than an election gimmick. The ruling elite—now popularly called the Deep State—may have disliked Trump when he was on the campaign trail, but undoubtedly they have few issues with him now.

Trump-friendly senator parrots ‘regime change’ calls against Iran

‘A US senator who reportedly advises US President Donald Trump’s White House on foreign policy has repeated baseless allegations against Iran, claiming that Tehran poses danger to the security of the United States.

“The policy of the United States should be regime change in Iran,” said Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton, Politico reported Sunday.

Cotton made the comments as the White House was busy devising a “comprehensive Iran policy,” as Stuart Jones, the acting assistant secretary of State for Near Eastern affairs, told The Associated Press last month.

Meanwhile, senior officials and key allies of the president were reportedly calling for “regime change” in Iran.

Trump, who recently clinched an arms deal with Saudi Arabia, accuses Tehran of destabilizing the Middle East, despite the monarchy’s aggression against the impoverished Yemen, promotion of the Takfiri Wahhabi ideology, and funding Daesh terrorists in Syria and Iraq.’

Trump ignored intel, launched Tomahawks in Syria based on media – Pulitzer winner Seymour Hersh

‘US President Donald Trump ignored reports from US intelligence that said they had no evidence Syria had used sarin to attack a rebel-held town, Pulitzer-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh says.

Hersh is most famous for exposing the My Lai Massacre and its cover-up during the Vietnam War. He also uncovered the abuse of prisoners by US personnel at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. In a report published by the German newspaper Die Welt on Sunday, he describes how the Trump administration mishandled the media frenzy after the Syrian bombing of the rebel-held town Khan Sheikhoun in April.

Trump chose to ignore reports compiled by American intelligence and the military that contradicted the prevailing media narrative accusing Damascus of using sarin gas to kill civilians, the report says, citing accounts by anonymous US military advisers. Instead, he ordered his military to prepare options for a response, which they did.’
