'She is not my leader':
Conservative backlash in Serbia as country elects it first lesbian prime minister who promises to boost gay rights as the country pushes for EU membership

* Ana Brnabić, 41, a graduate of the University of Hull, is Serbia's first gay PM

* She's also Serbia's first female prime minister in the conservative country

* Serbia, which wants to join European Union, has been eager to show increased tolerance after coming under pressure to improve protection for minorities

* But the decision was blasted by pro-Russian nationalists and traditionalists

The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, accepted the invitation of T. Nikolić to visit Serbia. In order for this visit to be realised, the invitation should be renewed by new President Aleksandar Vučić, but an agreement should also be reached with the Serbian Orthodox Church" – says Archbishop Luciano Suriani, Apostolic Nuncio in Serbia, in this interview for CorD Magazine...

Today Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates The Holy Cross Day ( "Krstovdan" )

On this day are commemorated two events connected with the Precious Cross of Christ: the first, the finding of the Cross on Golgotha and the second the returning of the Cross to Jerusalem from Persia. Staying in the Holy Land, the holy Empress Helena ( mother of Roman Emperor Constantine the First ), decided to took for the Precious Cross of the Lord. An old Jew called Judah was the only person who knew the whereabouts of the Cross, and, under pressure from the Empress, he revealed that the Cross was buried under the Temple of Venus that the Roman Emperor Hadrian had built on Golgotha. The Empress ordered that this idolatrous temple be pulled down, and then, digging deep below it, she found three crosses. While the Empress was in uncertainty about how to recognize which cross was the Lord's, a funeral procession passed by. Then Patriarch Macarius told them to place the crosses one by one on the dead man. When they placed the first and second on him, the dead man remained unchanged, but when they placed the third on him, he was restored to life. By this, they knew that this was the Precious and life-giving Cross of Christ. After that, they placed it on a sick woman, and she recovered. Then the Patriarch raised the Cross aloft for all to see, and the people sang with tears: 'Lord, have mercy!' The Empress Helena had a silver casing made, and placed the precious Cross in it. Later, King Chozroes conquered Jerusalem, took the people into slavery and carried the Lord's Cross off to Persia, where it remained for fourteen years. In 628, the Greek Emperor Heraclius was victorious over Chozroes and brought the Cross back to Jerusalem with great ceremony. Entering the city, Heraclius was carrying the Cross on his back, but suddenly the aged Emperor was unable to take another step. Patriarch Zacharias saw an angel directing the Emperor to take off his imperial robes and walk beneath the Cross along the way that Christ had walked, barefoot and humiliated as He had been. He passed this vision on to the Emperor, who stripped himself of his raiment and, in poor clothing and barefoot, took up the Cross, carried it to Golgotha and placed it in the Church of the Resurrection, to the joy and consolation of the whole Christian world.

I do not know who officially brought that decision. President Vucic who repeating "Serbia is neutral" put Army of Serbia in paramilitary group of EU.  :o Without public debate or any debate. It talks that NATO will come back to Central Serbia to take maneuvers with AS.

RT
‘Double standard & hypocrisy’: Serbian president on EU denouncement of Catalan referendum
https://www.rt.com/news/405452-vucic-kosovo-catalonia-eu-hypocrisy/

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has accused the EU of hypocrisy and double-standards following its denouncement of the Catalonian referendum as illegal, while acknowledging the independence of the breakaway province of Kosovo.

"The question every citizen of Serbia has for the European Union today is: How come that in the case of Catalonia the referendum on independence is not valid, while in the case of Kosovo secession is allowed even without a referendum," B92 quoted Vucic as saying during a news conference.

"How did you proclaim the secession of Kosovo to be legal, even without a referendum, and how did 22 European Union countries legalize this secession, while destroying European law and the foundations of European law, on which the European policy and EU policy are based?"

On Monday the European Commission echoed the Spanish government’s stance that the referendum held in Catalonia was illegal, describing the events on Sunday, which saw voters being beaten by Spanish riot police, as an “internal matter”. By contrast in 2010, the European Parliament adopted a resolution urging its member states to recognize Kosovo’s independence.

"This is the best example of the double standards and hypocrisy of the world politics,"
Vucic said.

The largely ethnic-Albanian province of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 after a war in 1999 which saw the US and its NATO allies intervene on behalf of Albanian rebels against the government of what was then Yugoslavia.

NATO’s mission, however, lacked a UN Security Council mandate, and according to Human Rights Watch, up to 528 Yugoslav civilians were killed during the bombing campaign between March and June 1999.

Serbian sources put the death toll much higher, possibly as many as 2,500 civilian casualties including 89 children.

NATO's targets were not exclusively military sites, but also included civilian buildings, such as the Serb Radio and Television (RTS) headquarters in Belgrade, which led to 16 deaths.

After the war, many ethnic Serbs, who formed around 10 percent of the population, fled the province fearing reprisals from Albanian militias. The Republic of Kosovo is now split into seven administrative zones, with the region’s remaining Serbian population occupying the Mitrovica district in the north.

Russia has consistently pointed out the hypocrisy in the EU allowing the Kosovars to declare independence at Serbia’s expense, but condemning the 2014 referendum in Crimea which saw the formerly Ukrainian peninsula join the Russian Federation.

I never like minister Ivica Dacic. He was S. Milosevic`s chief for Belgrade ( although is born on Kosovo !) But yesterday Serbian FM Dacic with statements show himself like statesman.

Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said on Sunday that Serbia firmly supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Spain, as well as its unity. He added that Spain is one of Serbia's greatest friends....Apparently referring to Kosovo, Dacic added that double standards have manifested in Serbia's case - and that in Spain, "as in our case, we are talking about unilateral moves that are not in accordance with the Constitution and the central government and as such constitute a violation of international law."

"It is interesting to me that some politicians from Serbia went to Barcelona, but did not go to Banja Luka when there was talk of a referendum (in the Bosnian entity Republic of Srpska ). That is unprincipled," Dačić said, alluding to separatist LSV party leader Nenad Canak.

Dacic once again stressed that Serbia's position remains unchanged, and that the country warned that "the scenario that happened to us can happen to every country in the world."

"If there is no international law, there is no one to protect us, and everything depends on the love of great powers - and that is a very relative category," Dacic said.
Spain is one of five EU member states that have not recognized the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo.
