Kashmir: Pakistan and India exchange artillery fire amid escalation in dispute
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/kashmir-india-pakistan-ceasefire-nuclear-hindus-muslims-islam-terrorism-uri-asia-latest-a8227491.html

'India and Pakistan have exchanged artillery fire in the disputed Kashmir region, forcing hundreds of people to flee, police in Indian Kashmir said – raising fresh doubts about a 15-year-old ceasefire between the nuclear-armed rivals in the area.

It was not clear what triggered the latest fighting on Saturday in the Uri sector on the so-called Line of Control (LoC) that divides the mostly Muslim Himalayan region.

But tension has been running high since an attack on an Indian army camp in Kashmir this month in which six soldiers were killed. Spam_A Spam_B India blamed Pakistan for the attack and said it would make its rival pay for the “misadventure”.

Police superintendent Imtiaz Hussain said artillery shells fired by the Pakistani army fell in the Uri area and hundreds of villagers had fled from their homes.

Indian forces returned artillery fire, an Indian officer said, the first time the heavy guns had been used since a 2003 ceasefire along the disputed frontier.

The two armies have been exchanging intermittent small arms and mortar fire over the past couple of years as relations have deteriorated.'

De-escalation delayed: India & Pakistan exchange shelling on Kashmir border, casualties reported
http://www.rt.com/news/452825-india-pakistan-shelling-civilians/

'Just a day after an Indian pilot was freed from Pakistani captivity, offering hope for de-escalation, the two countries resumed shelling in Kashmir, killing a number of civilians on both sides, according to local authorities.

A 24-year-old woman and her two siblings were killed on Friday night near the Line of Control, a heavily militarized frontier that divides Pakistani and Indian parts of Kashmir. Another civilian was gravely injured in the shelling, NDTV reported, citing local police.

Meanwhile, on the Pakistani side of the line, Indian artillery fire killed a boy and wounded three people, according to a government official. He told AP that the neighbor’s forces were “indiscriminately targeting border villagers,” and added that Pakistani troops were “befittingly” responding to the Indian artillery barrage. The deadly shelling came despite some signs of a de-escalation in the latest crisis. On Friday, Pakistan released a captured Indian pilot in what its prime minister called a “peace gesture.”

After a dogfight over Kashmir on Wednesday morning, India initially said that all of its pilots had returned safely, but Pakistan’s Information Ministry then released – and later deleted – footage showing the pilot blindfolded, with blood on his face.

India then confirmed the loss of one of its MiG-21s and the capture of its pilot, but demanded that he be immediately released. It said that it had also foiled an attack by Pakistani warplanes over Kashmir, and shot down one Pakistani plane. Islamabad denies that any of its aircraft were shot down.

Pakistan and India have fought on several occasions over Kashmir since they gained independence from the British Empire in 1947. Each country controls a section of the territory, separated by one of the most militarized borders in the world, known as the Line of Control, which has seen frequent shelling and several short-term conflicts.'

Pakistan tests new homegrown ‘smart weapon’ amid tensions with India (VIDEO)

'The Pakistan Air Force has successfully tested a new domestically-built extended-range missile, said to be a “smart weapon.” It also vowed to respond “with full force” if subjected to any foreign aggression.

The weapon, which is apparently an air-to-surface missile, has been deployed by a JF-17 Thunder – a Chinese-Pakistani multirole fighter jet – the Air Force said on Tuesday. No characteristics of the new missile have been made publicly available, yet it is described as a “smart weapon” which has an “extended” range.

A short and grainy video of the test has been released, showing a fighter jet deploying the missile which then hits the designated area at a proving ground. Footage ends with a still showing the crater made by the missile.'

Indian Navy deploys aircraft carrier & nuclear subs to deter ‘misadventures’ by Pakistan
http://www.rt.com/news/454088-india-pakistan-warships-deployment/

'Dozens of Indian warships, including an aircraft carrier and nuclear-powered submarines, left a massive maritime exercise and were deployed amid simmering tensions with Pakistan, the Navy has confirmed.
<div class="article__text text ">

INS ‘Vikramaditya,’ a Russian-built aircraft carrier, and a number of nuclear submarines have set sail along with other vessels and aircraft, according to a statement by the Indian military. The move, which risks adding fuel to the latent animosity between New Delhi and Islamabad, is intended “to prevent, deter and defeat any misadventure by Pakistan in the maritime domain.”

Most of the warships were part of TROPEX 2019, India’s largest war games involving the Navy, Air Force and Army. As tensions mounted between India and Pakistan, they were “swiftly transited from exercise to operational deployment mode,” the military said.

The wordy statement doesn’t say much about the time of the deployment, nor did it mention the names of the submarines in question. There are only two vessels of this class, the INS ‘Chakra,’ an Akula-class attack submarine leased from Russia, and the INS ‘Arihant,’ an indigenous ship carrying up to 12 ballistic missiles.'
