Facebook Adds Another New Censorship Tool To Stop “Conspiracies” and “Misinformation
By Vin Armani

In the video below, Vin Armani gives an update about YouTube and Facebook’s latest attempt to censor content on their platforms. He discusses a brand new Facebook tool to further censor conspiracy theories, and misleading and sensational content. Well, that’s subjective.

Facebook posted a press release to announce the new tool, writing:

We want to help people build an informed community on Facebook. That’s why we’re always working to understand which posts people consider misleading, sensational and spammy so we can show fewer of those and show more informative posts instead.

We hear from our community that they’re disappointed when they click on a link that leads to a web page containing little substantive content and that is covered in disruptive, shocking or malicious ads. People expect their experience after clicking on a post to be straightforward.

Starting today, we’re rolling out an update so people see fewer posts and ads in News Feed that link to these low-quality web page experiences. Similar to the work we’re already doing to stop misinformation, this update will help reduce the economic incentives of financially-motivated spammers.

‘Pay to play’: Facebook rolls out nightmare scenario for publishers on its network

https://www.rt.com/news/407594-facebook-change-explore-feed-traffic/

'Facebook is testing out a change to their network in six markets. As a result, posts from some publishers and businesses will be removed from the site’s News Feed section. The change has caused a dramatic drop in referral traffic to news outlets.

The posts will now only be shown in a separate tab called ‘Explore Feed,’ which was officially unveiled last week. The test is only active for people in Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Slovakia, Serbia, Guatemala, and Cambodia. Facebook confirmed the test on Monday, which was first spotted by Slovakian journalist Filip Struharik.

Some of the top Facebook pages in Slovakia lost as much as two-thirds to three-fourths of their reach due to the change, according to Facebook-owned analytics tool CrowdTangle.

Stories from publishers and businesses are being transferred from the main feed to the Explore Feed, while the main feed is reserved for posts from friends and family.

It may end up with publishers having to pay Facebook to promote their stories so that people can see them.'

Social media 'fuels crimes by children': From blackmail to squabbles that end in violence, report reveals toxic effects on young

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5018453/Social-media-fuels-crimes-children.html

'Social media is the ‘catalyst’ for some of the most serious violent and sexual attacks committed by young people, a report shows.

Crimes are being plotted by children and teenagers online in ways that were ‘inconceivable’ just a few years ago, warned the probation watchdog.

Instead of trouble springing from youths loitering on street corners, they are now planning and inciting offences using smartphones and computers in their bedrooms, said Chief Inspector of Probation Dame Glenys Stacey.

In one in four cases, young people’s use of social media sites, such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, was directly related to the crime they had committed.

The report by HM Inspectorate of Probation, published today, will lead to more calls for tech giants to do more to shut down content that promotes violence.

The watchdog said arguments involving troubled young people often start online before ‘escalating dramatically’ into physical assaults when the protagonists meet in the street or on public transport. Young people are also being blackmailed online, using indecent images that they have been pressured to upload on to the internet.'

Is Facebook eavesdropping on your conversations to send targeted ads?
Social network denies it taps into microphones to 'listen' to its users

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5031771/Facebook-exec-DENIES-social-network-spies-you.html

'Rob Goldman, VP of ads at Facebook has responded to accusations that the social network 'listens' to users through their devices to send targeted adverts.

Mr Goldman took to Twitter to defend Facebook, stating: 'We don't – and have never – used your microphone for ads.'

Instead, Facebook claims that its adverts are based on people's interests and other profile information.

Mr Goldman was responding to a tweet by PJ Vogt, the presenter of a podcast called Reply All.

Mr Vogt tweeted: 'Reply All is taking phone calls today. Call us if you believe that Facebook uses your mic to spy on you for ad reasons.'

Mr Goldman replied to explain that this was not true. He tweeted: 'I run ads product at Facebook. 'We don't - and have never - used your microphone for ads. Just not true.'

He added that the same applied to Instagram, which Facebook owns.

While Mr Goldman insisted that Facebook does not spy on people, not everyone seemed convinced.'

'God knows what it is doing to our children': Sean Parker turns on Facebook and blasts the social media site he co-founded for 'exploiting' human weakness

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5066445/Facebook-exploits-human-weakness-says-Sean-Parker.html

'One of the biggest names in Silicon Valley criticized Facebook and other social media sites in an interview with Axios earlier this week.

Sean Parker said that people like himself and Mark Zuckerberg had just one goal it mind when it came to these platforms: 'How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible'

The answer, according to Parker, was by exploiting human weakness.

Parker said that he now sees himself as 'something of a conscientious objector' to social media, despite the fact that he owes most of his massive $2.4 billion fortune to his involvement with Facebook.

He also joked that Mark Zuckerberg would probably end up blocking him in the wake of his comments.'

Facebook’s Founding President Sean Parker Admits Social Network Manipulates Human Psychology

https://www.activistpost.com/2017/11/facebooks-founding-president-sean-parker-admits-social-network-exploits-human-psychology.html

'Facebook’s first president, Sean Parker, accused the social media giant of exploiting human “vulnerability” using psychology, warning “God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains,” Axios reported.

Speaking to the news publication, the billionaire entrepreneur and current executive talked about what he perceived the dangers of social media are and how it manipulates human psychology. Parker joined Facebook in 2004, when it was less than a year old and was also the former founder of Napster.

He is additionally the current founder and chair of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.

The shocking comments were made during an Axios event at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, about accelerating cancer innovation where he was there to speak on behalf of his institute.'

Facebook Blocks $200,000 Donation to Iran Quake Victims

http://ifpnews.com/exclusive/facebook-block-donation-quake-victims/

'Citing the US sanctions against Tehran, Facebook has reportedly blocked a sum of $200,000 raised in an online campaign launched by a US-based Iranian doctor to help the quake-hit people of Iran’s Kermanshah province.

When Tohid Najafi first learned that a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake had struck his native country, Iran, he wasted no time.

A medical professional based in Detroit, US, Najafi quickly set up a Facebook page to raise money for the families of the victims and the survivors of Sunday’s disaster.

The quake killed at least 450 people and injured more than 7,000 in Iran and neighbouring Iraq. An estimated 15,000 houses were destroyed, leaving some 70,000 people homeless.

Seeing the extent of the damage, Najafi on Monday rallied the 65,000 members of his online group, Persian Americans, to help.

He set a goal for $110,000 over the next month and hoped that within the first day he would manage to raise up to $15,000.

But when he woke up the next morning, online donors had already chipped in more than $80,000. By Wednesday, the sum raised had surpassed $200,000.'
