DEMOCIDE: MURDER BY GOVERNMENT

Governments have murdered hundreds of millions of their citizens and those under their control. The questions are, then, how is this democide defined, is genocide included, how many have been killed, how do we find this out, and what sources can be used?

The Bolshevik Revolution Reveals Six Phases From Freedom To Communist Misery
A hundred years on from the Bolshevik Revolution, we’d do well to study the stages and trends that put free societies on the path to totalitarianism.
...
There is a lot of overlap among the phases, but I think they can be roughly identified as:

1.) Laying the groundwork;
2.) Propaganda;
3.) Agitation;
4.) State takeover of society’s institutions;
5.) Coercing conformity; and
6.) Final solutions.

But first let’s look a bit more closely at what communism really means for human beings

...
Although communist and socialist governments murdered well more than 100 million people in the course of the twentieth century, that number spikes even further when you include the practical bedfellows of communism, like Nazism and fascism, for example. According to the calculations of Professor R. J. Rummel, author of “Death by Government,” totalitarian regimes snuffed out approximately 169 million lives in the twentieth century alone. That number is more than four times higher than the 38 million deaths—civilian as well as military—caused by all of the twentieth century wars combined.

Death by Government: Genocide and Mass Murder Since 1900 5th PRINTING Edition

by R. J. Rummel (Author)

This is R. J. Rummel's fourth book in a series devoted to genocide and government mass murder, or what he calls democide. He presents the primary results, in tables and figures, as well as a historical sketch of the major cases of democide, those in which one million or more people were killed by a regime. In Death by Government, Rummel does not aim to describe democide itself, but to determine its nature and scope in order to test the theory that democracies are inherently nonviolent.

Rummel discusses genocide in China, Nazi Germany, Japan, Cambodia, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Poland, the Soviet Union, and Pakistan. He also writes about areas of suspected genocide: North Korea, Mexico, and feudal Russia. His results clearly and decisively show that democracies commit less democide than other regimes. The underlying principle is that the less freedom people have, the greater the violence; the more freedom, the less the violence. Thus, as Rummel says, "The problem is power. The solution is democracy. The course of action is to foster freedom."

Death by Government is a compelling look at the horrors that occur in modern societies. It depicts how democide has been very much a part of human history. Among other examples, the book includes the massacre of Europeans during the Thirty Years' War, the relatively unknown genocide of the French Revolution, and the slaughtering of American Indians by colonists in the New World. This riveting account is an essential tool for historians, political scientists, and scholars interested in the study of genocide.

LENIN AND THE USE OF TERROR

SOME IMPORTANT QUOTATIONS

Lenin's use of mass murder was no accident.
It was a key part of his political world view.
The following quotes make that readily apparent.

(SEE ALSO OUR PAGE ON POLITICAL MASS MURDER.)

From the 1 September 1918 edition of the Bolshevik newspaper, Krasnaya Gazeta:

“We will turn our hearts into steel, which we will temper in the fire of suffering and the blood of fighters for freedom. We will make our hearts cruel, hard, and immovable, so that no mercy will enter them, and so that they will not quiver at the sight of a sea of enemy blood. We will let loose the floodgates of that sea. Without mercy, without sparing, we will kill our enemies in scores of hundreds. Let them be thousands; let them drown themselves in their own blood. For the blood of Lenin and Uritsky, Zinovief and Volodarski, let there be floods of the blood of the bourgeois - more blood, as much as possible.”

Excerpt from an interview with Felix Dzerzhinsky published in Novaia Zhizn on 14 July 1918.

“We stand for organized terror - this should be frankly admitted. Terror is an absolute necessity during times of revolution. Our aim is to fight against the enemies of the Soviet Government and of the new order of life. We judge quickly. In most cases only a day passes between the apprehension of the criminal and his sentence. When confronted with evidence criminals in almost every case confess; and what argument can have greater weight than a criminal's own confession.”

The Bolshevik Revolution — a Century of Blood

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, which fastened communism upon Russia, turning it into the Soviet Union. The results of this revolution have drenched the world in blood for the past century.

As the late University of Hawaii historian Rudolph Rummel once stated, “In practice, Marxism has meant bloody terrorism, deadly purges, lethal prison camps and murderous forced labor, fatal deportations, man-made famines, extrajudicial executions and fraudulent show trials, outright mass murder and genocide.”

Citing the examples of tyrannical communist dictators such as Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, and Mao Tse-tung, Steven Rosefielde wrote in his book Red Holocaust that at least 60 million people were killed as a result of the implementation of communist regimes, charging they are “collectively guilty of holocaust-style felonious homicides.”

The person who has been blamed for most of the deaths in the Soviet Union was Stalin, who succeeded Vladimir Lenin as the ruling dictator of the world’s first openly communist nation. There was a good reason that Christians in Russia referred to Lenin as the “Antichrist.” But as historian Robert Gellately asserts, “Stalin initiated very little that Lenin had not already introduced or previewed.” Robert Conquest, author of The Great Terror: A Reassessment, called Stalin’s murderous regime the logical successor to the one first established by Lenin.

For one thing, Lenin died about seven years after the Bolshevik Revolution began, and he was in poor health for the last part of his reign. Stalin, on the other hand, ruled the USSR through terror for a generation. The exact number of deaths for which Stalin bears responsibility is unknown, but it is certainly in the millions — possibly as high as 60 million.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn — a former gulag prisoner, Russia historian, and author — told of a district party conference during Stalin’s dictatorship in which applause for Stalin went on for several minutes: “NKVD [forerunner of the KGB] men were standing in the hall applauding and watching to see who would quit [applauding] first!” After 11 minutes, “The director of the paper factory assumed a businesslike expression and sat down.… That same night the factory director was arrested.”

It was a typical day in Stalin’s Russia.
...

From the first communist dictator of the Soviet Union, murder was a common practice.
Lenin said, “Terror is a form of military operation that may be usefully applied.”

It is impossible to determine exactly how many human beings were systematically murdered to advance the communist cause. But we can safely state it was in the millions. Sadly, the bloody terror that began on November 7, 1917, is still not over. The Godless, evil ideology implemented by the Bolsheviks a century ago is still claiming fresh victims today.

Democide: Understanding the State’s Monopoly on Violence and the Second Amendment

Gun control is predicated on the belief that private citizens cannot be trusted with firearms. That the state should have a "monopoly on violence" because it is less violent than individuals. And that firearms should be taken away from private citizens because only the state is responsible enough to handle them.

There is, however, a major problem with this: States are statistically far more violent than individuals. After all, in the 20th century alone, 262 MILLION people died at the hands of their own governments.

The term for this sort of atrocity is “democide.” It is one of the reasons the Founding Fathers included the Second Amendment in the U.S. Constitution – to allow citizens some form of protection against agents of a tyrannical government meaning to do them harm, as the Founders were forcibly disarmed as colonists by the British prior to the American Revolution.

Why Does the World Feel Wrong?
...

Our battle for liberty appears not just as a conflict between those who want freedom versus those who want control, but instead as the battle between normal people and the psychopaths. I have found incredible explanatory power of our world within the psychopathic hypothesis: The world feels wrong because psychopaths run it. In a country trained to discount and ridicule all ideas more than a standard deviation from the average, coherent explanations of observable social phenomena don't get much press. Without understanding physical laws, we would never have gained the massive improvements in our quality of life from technological developments. Similarly, without understanding our social systems, we will never escape from the tyranny unleashed on us by psychopaths. We should spread the word and explore this rich vein of thought with vigor.

Facing Mass Murder in Zimbabwe
By Kevin Engle and Gregory Stanton, 12 August 2005

"We would be better off with only six million people, with our own people who support the liberation struggle. We don't want all these extra people."
Didymus Mutasa –Zimbabwe’s Minister of State for National Security, Lands, Lands Reform, and Resettlement –August 2002

Operation Murambatsvina has been, “...a long cherished desire.”Robert Mugabe –Executive President of Zimbabwe –June 2005

...

Action not Discussion

As with Sudan and Niger, discussions about the situation in Zimbabwe have been taking place within the international community’s halls of power. The UN has compiled a damning report, the US and UK, in concert with other nations, have called on the Mugabe regime to cease and desist, while NGOs around the world have identified specific steps that can be taken to end this grave humanitarian crisis, yet the power elite in Zimbabwe have shown open contempt at demands that they end Operation Murambatsvina, a program of destruction that Mugabe cynically claims is meant to ―bring joy to the people.

Given Mugabe’s evident refusal to end the policies that will lead to the extermination, by attrition, of hundreds of thousands of Zimbabwean citizens, the time for discussion and hand wringing has passed. Now it is time for those nations with the moral will, and the necessary resources, to act decisively –either with, or without, the approval of Mugabe, the ZANU-PF, or this criminal regime's apologists.

Facing Zimbabwean Mass Murder

Mugabe, called upon to take measured, reasonable, and responsible steps to end the humanitarian crisis caused by Operation Murambatsvina – has refused.

New documents claim to prove Mugabe ordered Gukurahundi killings
This article is more than 4 years old

Recently released historical papers implicate Zimbabwean president in orchestrating the 1980s killings for political gain.

From January 1983, a campaign of terror was waged against the Ndebele people in Matabeleland in western Zimbabwe. The so-called Gukurahundi massacres remain the darkest period in the country’s post-independence history, when more than 20,000 civilians were killed by Robert Mugabe’s feared Fifth Brigade.

No one has accepted the blame for the violence, but the recent release of historical documents has shed new light on those responsible.
...
One-party state

The documents point to internal killings neither provoked nor sustained by outsiders, suggesting that the atrocities were driven from the top by Zanu-PF in pursuit of specific political objectives.

Viewed across a period of several years, the documents appear to provide evidence that the massacres were but one component of a sustained and strategic effort to remove all political opposition within five years of independence. Zanu-PF leaders were determined to secure a “victory” against a non-existent opposition in elections scheduled for 1985, after which there would be a “mandate” from the people to impose a one-party state.

Robert Mugabe’s Thirty Years of Tyranny and Murder
By Tom Ukinski on July 31, 2013

...

Back in 1965, Zimbabwe was called Rhodesia and controlled by Caucasians.  Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith’s campaign slogan was “a whiter, brighter Rhodesia.” Whites controlled the country but their population was diminishing.  In 1980 there were 150,000 whites and 7 million black citizens.  In 1979 “liberation” forces invaded from neighboring Mozambique and Zambia and the government soldiers could only kill so many.

Peace was negotiated, and an election was held in 1980.  Mugabe had returned from exile to participate.  His party, the “Patriotic Front” (Zanu-PF) used techniques of intimidation and violence—but the other parties were using them too. Mugabe became the first prime minister of the newly christened county of Zimbabwe.

There are two main ethnic groups in Zimbabwe, the Shona and the Ndebele.  Mugabe is a Shona.  He had a group of soldiers known as the Five Brigade trained in North Korea.  He used his Five Brigade to massacre an estimated 20,000 Ndebele.

Mugabe described the 2002 elections as “total war.”  Mugabe was running against Tsvangirai then too.  The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), headed by Tsvangirai, had begun in 1999.  Prior to the election, youth squads were recruited to hunt down supporters of the MDC.  They were abducted, tortured and killed.

...

Mugabe has maintained a tyrannical policy of intimidation, devastation and murder for over thirty years.

In 2005 the DNC won several parliamentary seats.  Mugabe initiated Operation Murambatsvina, which resulted in 700,000 people losing their livelihood and more than 2 million becoming further impoverished.

Finally in 2008, when Mugabe’s Zanu-PF lost to the Tsvangirai’s MDC in the first round of elections, Zanu-PF called for a runoff election.  Meanwhile the Zanu-PF killed hundreds and injured thousands.  Hundreds of women and girls were raped.

Meanwhile Zimbabwe’s economy was collapsing.  Inflation rates rose to 79.6 billion percent, the highest the world had seen since Hungary in 1946.  In order to stave off more bloodletting and economic collapse, Tsvangirai withdrew from the race.

Zimbabwe's controversial land reform program that resulted in the murder of several white farmers and saw thousands more forcibly removed
from their properties did not deserve the "bad publicity" it received, according to a senior figure in the country's central bank.

President Robert Mugabe oversaw the program, which began in 2000 and redistributed land held by white commercial farmers t
o black Zimbabweans, many of whom had little experience of farming.

The program sparked international condemnation and resulted in Western countries imposing crippling sanctions on the Southern African country. Land reform has also been blamed for Zimbabwe's economic crisis in 2009, when the currency collapsed under the weight of massive hyperinflation.
...

Mugabe has been unrepentant about the impact of the land reform program. The 93-year-old president recently commented that Zimbabwe would "never prosecute those who killed" white farmers during the program.

Mugabe has also pledged to evict the remaining white commercial farmers who own land in Zimbabwe and has denounced white ownership of land in the country.
