(1976) Jefferson Starship - St. Charles (promo film)

This is an promotional clip done by filmmaker John Cofrin for the song "St. Charles", as taken from 16mm film. It's far too rare and interesting to languish on in obscurity. From the 1976 album "Spitfire". Watch for Craig Chaquico skateboarding later in the clip...! ::)

Jefferson Starship Lyrics
"St. Charles"

Let me tell you 'bout a dream,
Dream.
You know I saw her in a dream.
Oh, St. Charles sings,
Sings about love.
St. Charles, tell me tonight,
Won't you tell me 'bout love.
You know I saw her in a dream.
There was China, in her eyes,
In a silk and velvet disguise,
She was movin' like a lady,
Lookin' like a dragon princess.
She was walkin',
walkin' by the river,
rollin' in a rhythm of love.
I never felt like this before;
I'll never stop, I just want more.
Oh, St. Charles sings,
Sings about love.
St. Charles, tell me tonight,
Won't you tell me 'bout love.
You know I saw her in a dream.
I was shang-hied by her way,
Hypnotized by the things she would say,
In the moonlight on the water,
We were like lovers in another lifetime.
Woh, is it only a vision?
Ah, it feels like a prison,
Just the spell of a demon and I can't get away.
Oh, St. Charles sings,
Sings about love.
St. Charles, tell me tonight,
Won't you tell me 'bout love.
Please tell me 'bout love.
I saw her in a dream.
Please tell me 'bout love.
I know I saw her in a dream....
Dream....
Let me take you,
To another place,
Another time,
Another world of people, dancin' in rhyme,
Dance in the air, six-fingered webbed,
Fair as the air.
She is the storm bringer, yeh.
The storm changer. yeh.
Tie, yourself down to the main mast.
Tie, yourself down to the main mast.
Like Ulysses in the water storm,
Winds comin' down the main line.
Tie, yourself down to the main mast,
Tie it down with love.
Tie it down with love.
Don't you feel it, stormin'?
I feel it coming, stormin'.
I can feel it now, stormin',
Don't you feel it comin', stormin'?
Arhhhhhh....
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'
stormin'

New York City Blues
The Yardbirds

(Keith Relf / Chris Dreja)
If you've ever been to New York City
You know what I'm talking about
Yes you do
Well, if you've ever been to New York City
You know what I'm talking about
They got such pretty little girls in that big town
Make a man wanna jump around and shout

I met a little girl there
She was about five foot eight
I said "I want you to love me."
She said "Why man, that'd be great."
So
I got long hair but
She took me back
Back to see her pad
But the first thing I saw when I arrived there
Was a big black shiny shotgun
In the hands of her dad

Alright now, this is how it was
Oh no!

Well alright!

I finally learned my lesson
Such a long time ago
Next little woman that I date
I've got to know, I've got to know her family too
Yes indeed, I gotta know her family too
But if you don't want to be filled full of shotgun holes
Mister, this song is just for you

The magnificent seven

Ring! Ring! It's 7 A.M.!
Move y'self to go again
Cold water in the face
Brings you back to this awful place
Knuckle merchants and you bankers, too
Must get up an' learn those rules
Weather man and the crazy chief
One says sun and one says sleet
A.M. and the F.M. the P.M. too
Churning out that boogaloo
Gets you up and gets you out
But how long can you keep it up?
Gimme Honda gimme Sony
So cheap and real phony
Hong Kong dollars Indian cents
English pounds and Eskimo pence

You lot! What?
Don't stop! Give it all you got!
You lot! What?
Don't stop! Yeah!
You lot! What?
Don't stop! Give it all you got!
You lot! What?
Don't stop! Yeah!

Gong - You Can't Kill Me.

Well, you can kill my father, you can kill my son
You can kill my children with a gun
You can kill my family, my family tree
You can kill my body, baby
You can kill my body, baby
But you can't kill me
My lord, I love you
My lord, I love you

Now you're here, then you're gone
Night and day, right and wrong
You can do what you want
You can do what you want
You can do what you want
You can do what you want

Now you're here, then you're gone
Night and day, right and wrong
You can do what you want
You can do what you want
You can do what you want
You can do what you want

I see you sittin' there on your old back veranda
You got your Shady Lady and Waltzing Matilda
I only wanna know if you really remember
You're really only me in a ......... banana

I see you sittin' there on your old back veranda
You got your Shady Lady and Waltzing Matilda
I only wanna know if you really remember
You're really only me in a ......... banana

I'll be seein' you again
I'll be bein' you again
I'll be dreamin' you again
'Gain and again and again
I'll be seein' you again
I'll be bein' you again
I'll be dreamin' you again
'Gain and again and again

(repeat)

I used to hang out with the floating-anarchy people.
Namely shared house with Kif, from Here & Now.

Which is quite unbelievable now I think of it.
It must have been destiny or Government.

Yeah, now this one.

Here And Now - Dog In Hell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbSXcgzoVk4

8 mins.
Listen to the lyrics, they're all Kif's. Sharpstrings on guitar. Probably writ in our kitchen.
And check the change, not a middle-8, at 3mins 50secs: Kif sings & drums all the way.

"I am the robot, I just do what I'm told, we think we're changing the world."
"They've taken care of that one; they took care of that one, haven't they",
"Let's get out and change it, [...]; I don't care if we get shot to pieces."

"Warning, warning! This ain't a song; it's a warning-ah."
"It's just you and me man, we'll save all that energy,
"And then we'll turn it into ecstasy ...".

    1979; just yesterday, right?

'But I am still there, I am still there!'
"Then, why are you here as well?"
' Because it is ..., it is linear '.

Today I am mostly singing the entirety of 'Selling England by The Pound', by Genesis:
In Tonic but mostly Perfect 3rd's, 5ths and the occasional 7th, without reverb.
If you turn your chit-chat mind off, you may just be able to hear it.
Though a recording might disprove my assertion of 'perfect'.

"The Battle of Epping Forest,
yes it's the Battle of Epping Forest,
right outside your door.
We guard your souls for peanuts,
and we guard your shops and houses
for just a little more.

Up, up above the crowd,
inside their Silver Cloud, done proud,
the bold and brazen brass, seen darkly through the glass.
The butler's got jam on his Rolls; Roy doles out the lot,
with tea from a silver pot just like any picnic.

Along the Forest Road, it's the end of the day
and the Clouds roll away.
Each has got its load - they'll come out for the count
at the break-in of day."

(extract of Epping Forest, battle of.)

When I went to see THE CLASH at The Hell's Angel Club, Brixton, aka 'The Academy',
during their world tour, probably '81 or so, The Mixing Desk was run by barbarians.

All the PFL (Pre-Fade Listen) lamps were permanently in the RED. I checked the desk out.
The sound was dreadful, It really spoiled my gig. I think the mix crew should have been removed.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I can confidently say, that being in the same situation again today,
I would undoubtedly wrestle those idiots to the ground and take over the desk, single-handed.
I think they were drunk, or on coke or something awful and clearly they were looking for it.

I was just a cool-dude, squatter, I didn't know about fighting or taking things over because I must.
The Clash were a melodic harmonising band, and you don't want the mix to sound like a band of Drunks
charging down your street banging old Zinc-Dustbin-lids. See, "Lost in the Supermarket" and most of the
"Sandinista" Album; it's all very melodic, lots of rich chord sequences and syncopation, detail not to be lost.

I once mixed for a French band, for instance, and they had to have their mix reflect their complicated, very complicated interpersonal and sexual lifestyles. They lived in a commune, so the mix must be a comment on who was top-dog, who was best listener, who needed to be taken down in the mix to belittle them. That's like Fleetwood Mac but squared. Punk wasn't like that of course. All the indulgences of the past music style were destroyed. The mix must reflect the Political Fight against Elitist indulgence and did.

It's not difficult. In punk, you just move the faders till the sound is great, aggressive, punchy but not unlistenable. And that came naturally for me and I would have been good at mixing New-wave/Punk, I knew how to make that sound.
