Trump fires Secretary of State Tillerson, replaces him with CIA chief Pompeo
http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-new-c-i-a-deputy-chiefs-black-site-past

'President Trump has decided to remove Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and replace him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, Trump announced Tuesday.

The move, first reported by The Washington Post, was followed by a tweet from Trump.

Gina Haspel will become the first woman director of the CIA, Trump said. Both she and Pompeo will have to be confirmed by the Senate.

Haspel is currently deputy director of the CIA. Spam_A Spam_B The decision ends a tumultuous tenure for Tillerson, who often seemed at odds with Trump or out of the loop altogether.

Trump’s tweet Tuesday came the day after Tillerson blamed Russia for an assassination in London — something the White House had specifically not done just hours before.

Last Thursday, Tillerson said it would be premature for Trump to hold talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Later that evening, Trump said he would meet Kim by May to discuss the future of North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Last year, Tillerson said the United States should talk with North Korea, which Trump quickly shot down. It was later reported that Tillerson had called Trump a moron after a White House meeting.'

'From 2003 to 2005, Gina Haspel was a senior official overseeing a top-secret C.I.A. program that subjected dozens of suspected terrorists to savage interrogations, which included depriving them of sleep, squeezing them into coffins, and forcing water down their throats. In 2002, Haspel was among the C.I.A. officers present at the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, an Al Qaeda suspect who was tortured so brutally that at one point he appeared to be dead.

On Thursday, the Trump Administration announced that Haspel would become the C.I.A.’s new deputy director.

It appears that the debate about torture in the President’s mind, if there ever was one, is over.

Haspel, a career C.I.A. employee, took part in another of the agency’s darkest moments: the destruction, in 2005, of video tapes of the interrogation of Zubaydah and a second suspect, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, at whose torture she was present, three years before.

Because Haspel’s new job is exempt from congressional confirmation, it’s doubtful she will ever have to publicly answer questions about her role in what amounts to America’s dirty war.

John Sifton, a senior official at Human Rights Watch, said the significance of Haspel’s appointment lies in the fact that she was intimately involved in the secret C.I.A. program known by its initials, R.D.I.—rendition, detention, and interrogation. Through the program, the C.I.A. not only tortured suspects but kidnapped them from various places around the globe and often delivered them to third-party countries that tortured them.'

A 'Defining Moment' to Stand Against Torture as Human Rights Groups Demand Senate Reject Gina Haspel for CIA

'As Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump's pick to head the CIA, continues to face intense scrutiny over her "central" role in the Bush administration's torture regime ahead of her May 9 Senate hearing, more than 40 national human rights and civil liberties organizations sent a letter (pdf) to every U.S. senator on Thursday demanding that they refuse to confirm an author of "one of the darkest chapters in American history."

"Ms. Haspel chose to embrace a program that, as she knew better than most, was brutally dismantling other human beings both physically and psychologically," observes the coalition of groups, which includes CodePink, the Arab American Institute, and Peace Action. Spam_A Spam_B "If the Trump White House is going to tell the next CIA director to bring back 'enhanced interrogation,' such orders are most likely to issue in the wake of another national crisis, and again be accompanied by purported legal justification. In those circumstances, why would members expect Ms. Haspel to choose differently?" the groups add.

The letter goes on to note that Trump "has openly advocated for torture on multiple occasions," signalling his willingness to resurrect the CIA program, which remains shrouded in secrecy years after it was officially shut down.

Despite this secrecy, extensive reporting and accounts from former CIA officials indicate that, as an intelligence officer, Haspel played a key role in the torture program and later destruction of evidence.

"To the best of my understanding, she ran the interrogation program," one former CIA official told The Daily Beast. "Her becoming director absolutely terrifies me. Once I heard her name, I immediately thought, 'Oh, God.'"

CIA agrees to partially declassify Haspel documents
http://www.rt.com/usa/425140-cia-declassify-haspel-documents/

'The CIA announced Tuesday that it will allow senators mulling the nomination of Gina Haspel as director to review classified information from her long and controversial career with the agency.

“The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) remains committed to transparency with the full Senate by providing a complete picture of Deputy Director Haspel’s 33-year career at CIA,” reads a letter from the agency to Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM), obtained by The Hill. The CIA offered no further explanation as to what details from Haspel’s career would be covered in the release, as much of her time with the agency has been spent undercover.

Along with Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), Heinrich had been demanding the agency declassify information, so that members of the public and senators not on the Senate Intelligence Committee could properly weigh her nomination as the agency’s new director. Spam_A Spam_B The CIA has argued that certain details must remain classified, to protect officers who were involved in the agency’s detention and interrogation program.

“If the CIA were unable or unwilling to protect personnel's affiliation with the CIA and activities, not only would this benefit our nation's adversaries, future personnel may be less willing to accept dangerous job assignments, thereby significantly impairing the CIA's ability to conduct its clandestine intelligence mission,” CIA Director of Congressional Affairs Jaime Cheshire wrote.

Haspel’s nomination is tinged with controversy, and has fuelled fears that President Donald Trump is assembling a “War Cabinet,” with hardliners like Mike Pompeo, John Bolton, and potentially Gina Haspel occupying key positions in his administration.'

‘Intimately involved in torture’: 109 ex-US generals against Gina Haspel’s CIA bid
http://www.rt.com/usa/425029-us-generals-oppose-haspel/

'As many as 109 retired US generals and admirals urged lawmakers to reject Gina Haspel’s nomination as CIA director for being “intimately involved in torture,” and to declassify her role in the notorious interrogation program.

Haspel, a career intelligence officer nicknamed the ‘queen of torture’ in some US media, should not be appointed as director of the CIA, the retired US military leaders argued in a letter addressed to lawmakers. Generals and admirals who signed the petition said there were troubled by the prospect “of someone who appears to have been intimately involved in torture” being elevated to a top position in the US intelligence community.

The letter was published on the Human Rights First website on Monday. Among the notable signatories are chief of US Transportation Command Walter Kross, former commander of US Army Europe David Maddox, former Marine Corps Commandant Charles Krulak, and Lee Gunn, former Inspector General of the Department of the Navy.

The document cites “uncontested reports” that Haspel ran a CIA “black site” prison, and mentions her role in the oversight of the CIA’s controversial interrogation program “that was rife with mismanagement and abuse.”

While understanding that some top-tier intelligence officials “have spoken highly” of Haspel’s professional experience, there is still no excuse for her involvement in torture and rendition practices, the high-ranked retirees said. They resolutely rejected an idea that Haspel was simply obeying orders from her superiors.

“We did not accept the ‘just following orders’ justification after World War II, and we should not accept it now,” the letter said. This was an apparent reference to the post-war trials in which the defenders of many Nazi war criminals tried to claim they were merely following instructions from their superior commanders.

“Waterboarding and other forms of torture or cruel and inhuman treatment are – and always have been – clearly unlawful,” the document reads. “Individuals in the service of our country, even at the lowest levels, have a duty to refuse to carry out such actions.”'

But, but, but, "THE CIA IS OUT TO GET TRUMP!"

Also, I love how "the left", somehow completely forgot everything about why they supposedly railed against George W. Bush.  How's that "anti-war movement" workin' out for you "leftists"?

Confirmation of Gina Haspel as CIA Director in Doubt

She’s a career intelligence officer, the first female deputy CIA director, it’s torturer-in-chief, earlier running a black site in Thailand, notorious for using torture during interrogations.

Post-9/11, she was instrumental in launching global black site torture prisons. Reportedly she was involved in destroying incriminating videotapes, showing torture at the facility she ran along with others.

She remains unaccountable for high crimes too grave to ignore, promoted instead, nominated by Trump to head Langley.

Torture is illegal at all times, under all circumstances, with no allowed exceptions. Washington makes its own rules, international, constitutional and US statute laws discarded with impunity.

Reportedly Haspel wanted her name withdrawn to avoid embarrassing Senate confirmation hearing testimony - certain to include questions about her involvement in the CIA’s torture program. Spam_A Spam_B According to the neocon/Langley house organ Washington Post, “Haspel told the White House she was interested in stepping aside if it avoided the spectacle of a brutal confirmation hearing on Wednesday and potential damage to the CIA’s reputation and her own.”

On Friday, she met with administration officials at the White House. Trump reportedly wants to stick with her.

Her Senate Intelligence Committee confirmation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. Much can change between now and then.

On Sunday, CBS News reported that her nomination “is going forward,” according to an unnamed administration official.

She’s the first woman nominated to head the agency. It sent Congress a declassified memorandum, clearing her of any wrongdoing in destroying videotapes of harsh interrogations amounting to torture.

On Saturday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders indefensibly defended her, saying there’s no one “more qualified to be the first woman to lead the CIA than” Haspel.

The late Chalmers Johnson understood how the agency operates from firsthand experience - earlier serving as a consultant to its Office of National Estimates (ONE).

It operates extrajudicially, he said, uncontrolled by checks and balances. Its most sinister mission involves “perform(ing) functions and duties related to intelligence affecting the national security as the National Security Council may direct.”

Operating unaccountably worldwide, it’s involved in toppling democratically elected governments, assassinating heads of state and key officials, propping up friendly despots, and continuing the agency’s torture program without admitting it.

Langley is largely a global Mafia hit squad incompatible with democratic freedoms and rule of law principles.

Johnson said its “unchecked power (and existence) “shorten the life of the American republic.”

Haspel was the agency’s torturer-in-chief, her confirmation by no means certain. It could still be withdrawn at the 11th hour.

Her deplorable record can’t be erased or papered over. She symbolizes a rogue agency incompatible with what free societies cherish.

Former CIA analyst dragged from Haspel hearing by Capitol Police after anti-torture protest
http://www.rt.com/usa/426282-mcgovern-protest-haspel-hearing/

Former CIA analyst and anti-war activist Ray McGovern was forcibly removed from the US Senate hearing where Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump’s nominee for CIA director, was answering questions about her record on torture.

McGovern was dragged from the room by Capitol Police after demanding that Haspel answer questions put to her about the waterboarding of terror suspects at a CIA “black site” in Thailand.

As McGovern struggled, police repeatedly shouted at him to “stop resisting!” Due to the commotion in the room, it was unclear exactly what McGovern said to Haspel. He wrote an opinion piece headlined, “Will a Torturer Become CIA Director?” ahead of the nomination hearing, claiming that the torture is not only immoral, but fails to give the correct intelligence. Spam_A Spam_B Before the McGovern incident, Haspel was interrupted by another lone protester. A woman, wearing a red t-shirt and shouting “Bloody Gina!” and “you are a torturer!” was also removed by police.

“Bloody Gina” was the nickname given to Haspel by her CIA colleagues, according to whistleblower John Kiriakou, who also claimed that Haspel personally tortured people because she “enjoyed it”.

Haspel was grilled by the Senate Intelligence Committee on topics ranging from the CIA’s failure to declassify documents related to her history at the agency, to her willingness to blindly follow "immoral" orders and her role in the destruction of CIA tapes depicting harsh interrogation methods.

McGovern is a frequent guest on RT where he has talked about the CIA's history of lying to the American public.'
