UK must be prepared to leave with no deal

PRO REMAIN cabinet members should resign ‘if they are not prepared to see the referendum result implemented’, argues outspoken Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen.

Writing in the Coalville Times, the North West Leicestershire MP, Mr Bridgen notes that the Government cull following the big vote in June 2016 has been exclusively confined to Brexiteers whilst cabinet members who have argued against the party’s General Election pledges have all stayed in post.

He writes: “A Foreign Secretary, two Brexit Secretaries and several senior Ministers have left the Government as they fought to uphold both the 2016 referendum result and the principles outlined in the 2017 Conservative Party manifesto which to remind you and colleagues was to leave the Single Market, the Customs Union and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

“No significant figure has left the Government from the Remain side which is very telling, as was the response to three cabinet ministers stating they would vote in Parliament to take ‘no deal’ off the table during the negotiations.

“No censure was issued to them in spite of them publicly speaking against the Government policy that ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’.

“They and all those MPs wanting no deal taken off the table are either excessively naïve negotiators or are looking for the UK to actually remain locked in the EU in perpetuity.”

With the Government set for another week of heated discussions with time running out to back Prime Minister Theresa May’s withdrawal deal to meet the stated EU exit date of March 29, Mr Bridgen adds: “It is clear that we have to be prepared to leave with no deal.

“If there is a successful vote to take no deal off the table, it would be akin to buying a car by locking yourself in the showroom and insisting to the salesman that you have to buy a car before you leave.”

Mr Bridgen, one of the most prominent Brexiteers on the Conservative back benches, also highlighted why it was always going to be an uphill battle to get a majority to implement the referendum result through the House of Commons.

“One of the issues around Brexit which I keep reiterating is that it’s trying to be delivered by a Parliament of whom three quarters of its members voted Remain.

“During the course of the negotiations, those who supported and called for the UK to leave the EU have accepted concession after concession,” he added.

BREXIT LIVE: Interfering Macron sparks furious Brexit BACKLASH ‘Look at your OWN country’
http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1095718/brexit-latest-news-emmanuel-macron-theresa-may-eu-exit-latest

'EMMANUEL Macron has sparked a vicious backlash for claiming Brexit was the result of an “irresponsible lie” and saying the situation represents the worst crisis since the Second World War. In the French president’s letter to the ‘Citizens of Europe’, published in a number of publications across the continent and in the UK, he said: “Who told the British people the truth about their post-Brexit future? “Who spoke to them about losing access to the European market? “Who mentioned the risks to peace in Ireland of restoring the former border?”

Many were quick to point out Mr Macron’s intervention comes as France has faced months of demonstrations by the Gilets Jaune ‘yellow vest’ protesters, which have killed 15 people and injured 1,800.

Hard-left French leader Jean-Luc Melenchon has called Macron “the most ridiculous leader in Europe, one who is unable to solve a problem in 16 weeks”.

And last night the Leave.EU campaign group tweeted: “Perhaps he could look to his own people first before lecturing Britain”.

Former MP Douglas Carswell tweeted: “Efforts to organise Europe by top down design are destroying Europe.

“The fools that preside over Europe are too arrogant to see this. A tragedy.”

Another Twitter user, @phil_328, said: “I think Macron needs to get his own house in order. Violent protests every week over his policies. He knows, as does the EU, if there were more referendums, he’d be in trouble.”'

Brexit: Theresa May suffers humiliating Lords defeat as peers demand UK stays in a customs union

''Theresa May faces a fresh headache over her Brexit strategy after peers inflicted a defeat on the government in favour of keeping the UK in a customs union with the EU.

The House of Lords supported a cross-party bid to keep Britain in a tariff-free trade bloc with Brussels, which means the legislation will bounce back to the Commons for approval.

Supporters of the Labour-led amendment to the Trade Bill argued MPs should have the opportunity to "think again" on the issue.

But Tory frontbencher Lord Bates pointed out the elected Commons had already rejected such a proposal, adding: "It doesn't need a chance to think again."

It comes as Brexit progress appeared to have ground to a halt after what both Downing Street and the European Commission admitted were "difficult" talks in Brussels on Tuesday.

The commission said there was still "no solution" to the Irish backstop impasse, despite a meeting between the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier and attorney general Geoffrey Cox and Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay.'

BREXIT ULTIMATUM: May turns screw on Brussels ahead of vote –'EU has to make a choice too'
http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1097178/brexit-new-latest-theresa-may-deal-today-eu-ultimatum-commons-vote

'THERESA May will today tell European Union leaders it is in their interests to agree a new divorce deal as she battles to keep Brexit on track.

Britain and Brussels were locked in a standoff on Thursday after Eurocrats demanded fresh proposals but were in turn accused of being intransigent. The Prime Minister will insist the government remains determined to secure legal changes to her exit agreement that will make it acceptable to MPs. But she will tell Brussels it must play its part in resolving the deadlock.

In a speech to workers in Leave-voting Grimsby, Mrs May will say: “Just as MPs will face a big choice next week, the EU has to make a choice too.

“We are both participants in this process.

“It is in the European interest for the UK to leave with a deal.'

Breitbart

Al Gore Brands UK Politicians ‘Cowards’ for Not Forcing Second Brexit Referendum
http://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/03/08/al-gore-brands-uk-politicians-cowards-for-not-forcing-second-brexit-referendum/

'Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore has branded British politicians “cowards” for failing to push their voters into a re-run of the 2016 referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union.

Speaking at the Climate Change Leadership summit in Porto, Portugal, the 70-year-old Democrat took aim at the (in)famous “Breaking Point” poster unveiled by Brexit campaign leader Nigel Farage at the height of the campaign, showing a huge column of illegal migrants pouring through the continent’s borders in late 2015.

“One of the most powerful posters in the ‘Brexit’ campaign was one that showed an endless line of refugees saying, ‘The EU failed’,” Gore told his hosts — although, in fact, the legend read “The EU has failed us all”. “I do not want to get into the issue, but as a politician I will say that I think politicians of the United Kingdom are cowards for not allowing a second referendum,” he declared, suggesting that many migrants — many of whom turned out to be violent criminals or even radical Islamic terrorists — are fleeing climate change.

The multi-millionaire did not press the issue, of Brexit, however, explaining: “I have enough problems in my country, with the crazy Trump.”

Referendums rejecting the proposed European Constitution in the Netherlands and France were worked around by repackaging it as the so-called Reform Treaty, or Lisbon Treaty, amending the previous Maastricht Treaty and Treaty of Rome — and not putting it to the public in either country this time.'

No deal Brexit BOOST: Public do NOT fear walking away says poll as deadline for May looms
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1098072/brexit-news-no-deal-uk-leave-EU-theresa-may-brussels-public-poll

'Public support for a no deal Brexit is now growing after the EU’s refusal to support Theresa May’s deal, a new poll suggests.

A survey by ComRes found that 44 percent of the public now support a no deal Brexit if Brussels refuses to make further concessions. The result is a six-point rise from January with less than 30 percent disagreeing that the UK should leave with no deal. It comes as 74 senior Tory activists told Mrs May that Tory voters “do not fear a no deal” and “just want Brexit delivered.” Senior Brexiteer Steve Baker and the DUP’s Westminster leader Nigel Dodds claimed on Saturday that Mrs May’s “unchanged” deal will inevitably be voted down on Tuesday. Further remarks made by the pair and backed by the former education secretary Nicky Morgan warn of a “political calamity” if Brexit is delayed.

Both Mr Baker and Mr Dodds are urging the Prime Minister to now use the £39billion divorce bill to secure a “safety net”.

The measure will allow for a period of up to 33 months following March 29 which will grant time for further preparations.

Last week a Downing Street source insisted Mrs May was "intensely focused on making progress" so the UK could leave with a deal.'

Once upon a time, true Labour Heavyweights opposed the EU

Labour heavyweights rock the Brexit debate (but that was in 1975)

ONCE upon a time the Labour Party provided Britain with a referendum on Europe that genuinely was a People’s Vote.

Then political heavyweights, including Tony Benn and Michael Foot, lit up the campaign that followed with their intelligent, forward-thinking arguments.

That was back in 1975. Much has changed, notably the Labour Party’s ability to grasp the key issues, but much has stayed the same – notably the words of Benn and Foot which now appear hauntingly prophetic.

The background to the vote rings some familiar bells.

Labour was in opposition when it pledged in its General Election manifesto in 1974 to put the unilateral decision by Prime Minister Ted Heath’s Tories to take the UK into the Common Market on January 1, 1973 to the public test.

And, unlike David Cameron and the Conservative Government in 2016, Labour stayed officially neutral in the debate that followed.

Yet even then their leaders were on opposite sides to the people. Most of a split cabinet wanted to stay, despite Labour members voting almost two to one to regain the UK’s independence in the lead up to the referendum.

Leading the ‘Leave’ campaign was Benn, the charismatic Secretary of State for Industry, who took part in a brilliant Panorama debate with Home Secretary Roy Jenkins, a staunch Marketeer (see video).

The main argument advanced by both Benn and Foot, later the Labour leader, in another TV debate with the since disgraced Heath (see video), was the transfer of power from Westminster to Brussels.

These comments ring distinct alarm bells now as the UK potentially lurches towards the loss of its national identity once the Lisbon Treaty fully comes into force in 2022.

Benn also eloquently rubbished the economic arguments for staying in Europe, pointing out that Britain was already trading at a £1 billion deficit with the EC in manufacturing – in contrast to handsome profits with the rest of the world.

He accurately predicted the continuing collapse of British industry and highlighted how we were being disadvantaged by the Common Agricultural Policy, which became more and more unpopular.

His fears over the loss of Parliamentary power was wrongly countered by Jenkins who suggested that a Federal Europe was unlikely.

In contrast, Benn says he would like to see decisions kept closer to the people – highly relevant as the EU beckons in global government and still greater unaccountability to the electorate.

Overall, however, it is more than worth noting that the tone of the debate – and that of Foot against Heath – did much greater credit to politicians on either side than the appalling bickering and abuse that has done so much to turn the general public off today.

The mutual respect between Benn and Jenkins is obvious as they allow each other to speak and then speak in a respectful and considered manner.

It’s not just my view that Foot, respected for his intellect but mocked for his appearance, destroyed Heath hands down.

The comments that accompany the video on You Tube highlight that Foot was the man who spoke with passion whilst Heath’s nervy body language matched his shallow arguments.

Foot makes the important point that all the main bodies of the EC were undemocratic with the power held by the unelected European Commission and the Council of Ministers rendering the European Parliament almost meaningless.

Foot says the Council of Ministers were the only group – possibly in the world – who had the ability to make laws in secret.

Again his remarks strike a modern-day chord as Heath’s reply that the UK would fight to make Europe more democratic has fallen foul of subsequent history.

Despite the persuasive contributions of the Labour duo, the electorate voted by 67 per cent to 33 per cent to stay in the Common Market.

Then with 41 years of experience which proved Foot and Benn increasingly right the general public reversed the result in 2016, albeit with a much smaller majority.

Only by implementing the will of the general public will we escape Foot and Benn’s warnings coming into full fruition. </div></p>

EU MANDATORY National Biometric ID Card Will Affect 512 Million People

The European Union’s MANDATORY National Biometric ID Card Will Affect 512 Million People

'A recent European Union (EU) announcement about national IDs will destroy millions of people’s privacy and create a near-global biometric database.

An article in State Watch News revealed that the EU has agreed to create a MANDATORY national biometric ID card.

Quote
Measures being negotiated as part of the EU’s ‘Security Union’ are moving ahead swiftly, with the Council and Parliament reaching provisional agreements on new rules for immigration liaison officers, the EU’s Visa Code and the introduction of mandatory biometric national identity cards; and the Council agreeing its negotiating position on the new Frontex Regulation.

Earlier this week, the Nepal government announced their plans to roll out a national biometric ID card that will affect 30 million people.

Last month, I wrote an article warning people about the global effort to restrict everyone’s right to travel. But what is happening across Europe and Asia should send chills down everyone’s back.

If you combine what is happening in the EU with America’s national biometric ID card, Real-ID, it becomes painfully obvious that everyone’s right to travel freely is in jeopardy.

512 million people will be forced to give up their privacy

A European national biometric ID card is all but a certainty.

All the EU needs is for 28 ambassadors to say yes, and just like that 512.6 million citizens will be forced to give up their privacy if they want to travel.

Quote
Today, representatives of the Council Presidency and the European Parliament reached an informal agreement on a regulation to improve the functioning of the European network of immigration liaison officers. It will now be presented to EU ambassadors for confirmation on behalf of the Council.

The Brussel Times claims that the member countries would have eight years to comply when the law takes affect.

How will this affect American travelers?

Any American wishing to visit any of the 28 countries that make up the EU will be profiled and given risk assessments by the “European Travel Information and Authorization System or ETIAS”'

RT - Russia Today

British MPs vote in favor of ruling out a ‘no-deal’ Brexit

'UK MPs have voted to take a ‘no-deal’ Brexit off the table for good as they passed a motion that rules it out in a decisive 321 to 278 vote.

The option of a no-deal was first ruled out by MPs after an amendment originally tabled by Caroline Spelman passed by a close vote of 312-308.

The Spelman amendment says the House “rejects the United Kingdom leaving the European Union without a withdrawal agreement and a framework for the future relationship.”

The MPs then voted on the main motion, as amended, passing it with an even greater margin of 43, with 321 voting in favor and 278 against.

After the vote, Prime Minister Theresa May again urged the MPs to back her Brexit deal with the EU – already rejected twice in the House – saying that otherwise a lengthy extension of Article 50 will be required.

“I profoundly regret the decision that this House has taken tonight,” May said. “I continue to believe that by far the best outcome is that the UK leaves the EU in an orderly fashion with a deal, and that the deal we have negotiated is the best and indeed the only deal available.”'

‘Total DISGRACE’ - Nigel Farage gears up to SAVE Brexit as he brands Parliament ‘LIARS’
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1099868/Brexit-news-Nigel-farage-Brexit-deal-UK-Parliament-Theresa-May-withdrawal-agreement-EU

'Yesterday MPs voted 312 to 308 in favour of Yvette Cooper’s amendment to remove a no deal Brexit which has now jeopardised the original referendum result in the eyes of many Eurosceptics. Now a member of the newly founded Brexit Party, Mr Farage has accused Parliament of failing to honour the original referendum result. With the UK’s exit date fast approaching, it remains unclear what direction the Government will take and due to that, Mr Farage has issued some brutal remarks.

In two tweets yesterday, Mr Farage said: “A total disgrace, Parliament no longer represents the people.

“This is a Parliament of outright liars. We will have to fight them again.

“And mark my words — we will beat them once more.”

After voting in favour of Ms Cooper’s amendment, MPs delivered another devastating blow to Mrs May as the Prime Minister lost another vote on her own no deal motion.'

Brexit: MPs vote by 412 to 202 to seek delay to EU departure
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47576813

Mrs May says Brexit could be delayed by three months, to 30 June, if MPs back her withdrawal deal in a vote next week.

If they reject her deal again then she says she will seek a longer extension - but any delay has to be agreed by the 27 other EU member states.

A spokesman for the European Commission said extending Article 50, the mechanism taking the UK out of the EU on 29 March, would need the "unanimous agreement" of all states.

And it would be for the leaders of those states "to consider such a request, giving priority to the need to ensure the functioning of the EU institutions and taking into account the reasons for and duration of a possible extension".

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was "in constant contact with all leaders," the spokesman added.'

BREXIT DELAY: EU pours cold water on May Article 50 extension – 'ALL EU27 need to approve'
http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1100264/brexit-news-brexit-delay-brexit-vote-eu-theresa-may

'THERESA MAY secured a Brexit victory on Thursday after MPs backed her plan to delay the UK's departure from the EU but just hours later Brussels appeared to pour cold water on the Prime Minister's win as the bloc warned any extension would have to be approved by all of the EU27 nations.

The Prime Minister dodged a string of Remainer attempts to seize control of Brexit, including a bid to force a second referendum. In dramatic scenes, Mrs May’s motion to extend Article 50 was passed by 412 votes to 202, a majority of 210. The Prime Minister must now ask the 27 remaining EU member states for a delay to Brexit beyond March 29.

But following Thursday night's vote, the EU has warned of potential hurdles in securing an extension of Article 50 to delay Brexit, namely that it must be approved by all members of the bloc.

A European Commission spokesman said: “We take note of tonight’s votes. A request for an extension of Article 50 requires the unanimous agreement of all 27 Member States.

“It will be for the European Council (Article 50) to consider such a request, giving priority to the need to ensure the functioning of the EU institutions and taking into account the reasons or and duration of a possible extension.”'

Andrew Neil SKEWERS Remainer Dominic Grieve – 'You're RIGGING second referendum'
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1100523/bbc-news-brexit-news-andrew-neil-dominic-grieve-video-Brexit-vote

'ANDREW Neil accused Remainer Dominic Grieve of trying to rig a possible second referendum in a savage takedown of the former Attorney General’s anti-Brexit sentiments.

The altercation occurred last night on BBC’s This Week. Veteran host Andrew Neil said to Mr Grieve: “You say that the public doesn’t want the May deal but you want a referendum on the May deal versus Remain. So you’re rigging the referendum from the start by choosing the most unpopular Brexit option!”

The Tory MP spluttered: “But that then brings us to the next problem.

“Of course you can put another option to the public as long as it’s one that a government can lawfully deliver.

“But the problem with no deal is that no respectable government which believes in an international rules-based system can put an offer to the electorate which they know will breach their undertakings to the Irish government under the Good Friday agreement.”'

BREXIT BREAKTHROUGH: May rebels to BACK DOWN and ‘hold their noses while voting FOR deal’
http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1100773/brexit-news-theresa-may-brexit-deal-brexit-vote-house-commons-ERG-DUP

'THERESA May was given new hope of securing her Brexit deal last night after fresh signs that Tory Eurosceptic and Democratic Unionist Party MPs are ready drop their opposition following fears the EU departure is under threat.

In a dramatic development in the effort to break the parliamentary deadlock, one of the Prime Minister’s fiercest Tory critics indicated that many of her Eurosceptic colleagues could vote for the Withdrawal Agreement in a third Commons “meaningful vote” expected on Tuesday. Former minister Esther McVey, who quit the Cabinet to vote against the deal in earlier divisions, conceded that Brexiteers were ready to “think again” because of fears that the UK’s departure from the bloc could be cancelled following Parliament’s vote for a Brexit delay until at least the end of June. She spoke out as senior ministers intensified talks with Mrs May’s parliamentary allies in the Democratic Unionist Party in an effort to win their backing for her deal.

DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds described the talks as “good” and “constructive” last night.

"We have had good discussion today. Those discussions will continue over the coming period of time,” he said.'

Rees-Mogg in brutal WARNING over EU exit delay - 'Parliament VS The People!'
http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1101241/Brexit-news-theresa-may-eu-european-union-meaningful-vote-brexiteers

'THERESA MAY is increasingly confident her Brexit deal will pass through the House of Commons at the third time of asking this week, after up to 75 hardline Eurosceptics showed signs of finally caving in.

However Jacob Rees-Mogg has hinted he will once again vote against the Prime Minister’s deal following a cryptic message on Twitter. The Chair of the influential European Research Group wrote “Parliament versus the People” in response to an article condemning the Government's handling of the Brexit process. Historian David Starkey wrote in the Daily Mail: “Ruled by comfortable, smug elites, Parliament is choosing to ignore the ordinary British people as they attempt to hold power to account.”

This follows a turbulent week in parliament where leading Brexiteers now fear the Prime Ministers deal is the only solution available after MPs passed a motion to prevent the UK leaving the bloc without a deal.

One cabinet insider told the Sunday Times both Iain Duncan Smith and Jacob Rees-Mogg were “on the verge” of backing Mrs May withdrawal agreement during the second ‘meaningful vote’ on Tuesday, before the full legal advise by Attorney General Geoffrey Cox was made public.'

Brexit lies - Brussels is offering us a false choice, says NIGEL FARAGE
http://www.express.co.uk/comment/expresscomment/1101246/Brexit-news-nigel-farage-latest-brexit-betrayal-march-sunderland

'AS a major moment in our history approaches all eyes are on parliament and our politicians.

Yet as each nail-biting day passes, there is another group which is being treated as though it is irrelevant - the people. At the cross-party Brexit group Leave Means Leave, we decided some time ago to confront this gigantic snub. For this reason we began a two-week march yesterday from Sunderland to London. The aim of this protest, which is open to everybody, is to send this message to Britain's politicians:We want the Brexit which we voted for delivered.

The march will culminate in a rally in Westminster. Will it be a celebration or a protest? As the final terms of Brexit remain unknown, none of us can answer that question.

What is certain is that it is vital to give voters an opportunity to make their feelings known. We know they won't be silenced and we understand that their anger is legitimate. They have been betrayed by a parliament of chumps. I genuinely believe that most Remainer MPs don't have a clue about how the EU works and don't understand what damage they have done to British democracy in recent weeks. Neither do they realise what a horror show they will unleash upon Britain if they accept Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement.'

‘EU are like the fucking mafia’ – British rock band The Who’s Roger Daltrey
http://www.rt.com/uk/454140-daltrey-brexit-eu-mafia/

'Roger Daltrey, the lead singer of legendary British rock band, The Who, has compared the European Union to the “f**cking mafia,” after being asked whether Brexit would be “bad for British rock music.”

In an interview with Sky News at Wembley Stadium, Daltrey, who has publicly backed Brexit, became visibly riled at questions on the thorny issue of Brexit. He rejected any notion that leaving the EU would have a negative impact on music bands touring Europe.

As if we didn’t tour Europe before the f**king EU. Oh give it up! If you want to be signed up to be ruled by a f**king mafia, you do it. Like being governed by FIFA.

“I’m not anti-Europe, I’m anti-Brussels, but people don’t get the distinction,” Daltrey added.

The Who were formed in 1964 and are one of the UK’s most famous rock acts, having produced 14 top-10 singles, including classics such as My Generation and Pinball Wizard, during the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.'

Brexit: John Bercow rules out third meaningful vote on same deal
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/mar/18/brexit-john-bercow-rules-out-third-meaningful-vote-on-same-deal

'The House of Commons Speaker has thwarted any attempt by Theresa May to bring a third meaningful vote to parliament, unless there has been substantial change to the Brexit deal.

With Theresa May’s plans thrown into chaos by the move, one of her chief law officers warned the government could be forced to cut short the parliamentary session and restart in order to bring back the Brexit deal.

John Bercow’s shock move, which drew immediate criticism from May’s allies, suggested he believed such a fundamental change would involve a renegotiation at EU level rather than clarification of the legal advice written by the attorney general, something that had been suggested this week.

The solicitor general, Robert Buckland, said the decision was a “constitutional crisis” and that the government might have to consider the drastic step of ending the parliamentary session early and restarting a new session. The Speaker has seized his Brexit moment – and now all bets are off

“We’re in a major constitutional crisis here ... This has given us quite a lot to think about in the immediate term. There are ways around this – a prorogation of parliament and a new session – but we are now talking about not just days but hours to 29 March,” Buckland told BBC News.

“Frankly we could have done without this, but it’s something we’re going to have to negotiate with and deal with.”

Downing Street was blindsided by the announcement and unable to give a response at its regular afternoon briefing for journalists. “The speaker did not forewarn us of the content of his statement or the fact that he was making one,” May’s spokeswoman said.

Ministers described the government as being in a state of shock. “It’s miserable, I think the first thing is the government having to come to terms with it,” one said.'

CrossTalk: Brexit On Life Support

CrossTalking with Renaud Girard, George Galloway, and Alan Sked.

The Brexit saga continues. The deeply divided British House of Commons can only seem to agree on one thing: It doesn’t want the UK to leave the EU without a deal. The problem is - there isn’t a parliamentary majority on what to do next. Maybe this was Theresa May’s plan all along - Brexit death through inertia.

Barnier tells May she must offer 'something new' to get long Brexit extension from EU - Politics live
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2019/mar/19/brexit-latest-news-bercow-speaker-theresa-may-to-chair-cabinet-as-government-responds-to-bercow-ruling-against-repeat-vote-on-deal-politics-live

'Paris reiterated its tough line on Tuesday afternoon, insisting no extension could be granted to the UK without the government presenting a credible “new strategy or plan” which would need to have parliament’s backing. An Elysée official said:

Quote
Playing for time just for the sake of playing for time would not constitute a project or strategy. Now is not the time for procrastinating.

Paris, which is impatient for the EU to turn to other issues of reform rather than facing much more time bogged down in Brexit, has reiterated that it needs concrete solutions from London. France won’t back an extension unless it comes with a clear, new, credible plan which can gain majority parliament support. France has insisted that the withdrawal agreement, which won’t be renegotiated, is a ticket to exit the EU in an “organised” way.

The source at the French presidential palace said London must give clarity on the way forward: “An extension is merely an instrument, it’s not a solution or a strategy in itself ... Now is not the time for pondering or looking at perspectives on Brexit”, instead it was the final hour to find a concrete plan.

Paris is adamant that it wants to protect “the functioning of the EU”. If a longer extension were to be granted, for example 12 months, “we would have to look at the implications of that”, in terms of how a country planning to leave would have a seat and a say in key future decisions, the official said.'
