How To Watch The 'Super Flower Blood Moon' Lunar Eclipse This Week
Updated May 25, 2021 10:15 PM ET

The lengthy name is the result of a few astronomical phenomena coming together at once. The supermoon will be visible all over the world, and the full lunar eclipse will be visible in many parts of the world, including the western United States.

Early risers in the U.S. can catch a spectacular view of the moon Wednesday morning before sunrise, but what you'll be able to see will depend largely on where you live.

Why it's "super": The shape of the moon's orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, but an oval. When a full moon reaches the point closest to our planet on its elliptical orbit, it's called a supermoon, or perigee-syzygy, and appears larger than usual in the sky.

Why it's "flower": Full moons that occur in May are sometimes known as flower moons. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, the name is a reference to the flowers that are blooming in May and has been attributed to Native American, Colonial American and European sources.

Why it's "blood": On Wednesday morning, the moon will also appear blood red as it aligns with the sun and Earth and passes fully into Earth's shadow, or umbra. This will be the first total lunar eclipse since 2019. The moon's red hue is caused by red-orange light refracted through Earth's atmosphere and can appear even redder if there are more clouds or dust in Earth's atmosphere, according to NASA.

The biggest draw of this celestial event is that a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse are occurring simultaneously. In the past 10 years, there have been just nine total lunar eclipses. Supermoons are more common — they typically occur several times a year.

What is the spiritual meaning of the blood moon?

The Blood Moon, with total lunar eclipse, is due to appear on the early hours of May 27, 2021.

Some preacher types, most notably in the United States, view the Blood Moon as a sign of the "coming apocalypse."

Speaking ahead of the phenomenon in 2018, Pastor Paul Begley, based in Indiana, said in an online sermon: "July 27, 2018, is not the end of the world but it is a sign of the apocalypse and we are in the era of the apocalypse.

"We are in the final days or the final chapter.

"We are getting ready to close the end of the age and it is important to understand that.

"Going forward it's going to get event crazier, so we're really, really living in the end times."

He read from the Book of Joel, which speaks of the Moon turning blood-red before the end of the world and the second coming of Jesus Christ.

In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, it speaks of end times saying in chapter six: "I watched as he opened the sixth seal.

"There was a great earthquake.

"The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind."

Volcano erupts in Alaska's Aleutian Islands chain
By The Associated Press
Wed., May 26, 2021

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A volcanic eruption in Alaska's Aleutian Islands chain sent an ash cloud into the air that remained visible on satellite images hours later but the threat level after the late Tuesday explosive blast was reduced as activity quieted, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said.

The observatory, in a statement Wednesday, said a 1-2 minute eruption of Great Sitkin Volcano began late Tuesday, resulting in an ash cloud that rose up to 15,000 feet above sea level. Since that eruption, seismicity had decreased and satellite images showed no additional ash emissions, the statement said. It noted that additional "explosive events are possible, but not certain."

Earthquakes In Lake Tahoe Present The Potential For Bigger Problems

LAKE TAHOE (CBS13) – Frequent earthquakes across Northern California over the last several weeks have sparked questions about the natural disasters ahead.

State Geologist Steve Bohlen with California Geological Survey says the region has recently experienced earthquakes in rapid succession.

"We happen to be in a bit of an active period right now," said Bohlen.

At the end of April, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake hit the center of Lake Tahoe, followed by a 4.7-magnitude earthquake in Truckee, which was felt from Sacramento all the way to Reno.

"That was the biggest one I felt since I was out here. There were some lights and stuff swinging, something fell off the wall," said Ryan Callahan, who was at the Tourist Club in Truckee when the earthquake hit.
